OT: Crazy ferret story

Okay, so most of you know I have three little ferrets running rampant in my house. Well, this afternoon during lunch something crazy happened. I was out on my back porch smoking a cig, about to go back inside, when I moved my foot and saw something next to it...a little ferret!! I have not seen this ferret before and it was crazy to see it outside of my house. I guess it smelled my other ferrets and knew it was a place they were safe, all just from me opening the door and going outside. I noticed it had the markings reffering to it being desexed and descented and knew it was okay to handle. It was very friendly and I took it inside. It is with my ferrets hanging out, but I may have just happed to adopt a new ferret. Obviously, me being such an avid animal lover, I will be putting signs around my neighborhood to find its rightful owner, but if not, I guess I'll be back up to four ferrets again. How crazy is that?? A ferret out of nowhere showing up on my, a ferret lover and owner's, porch!!

Similar story...

Many moons ago I was also a ferret owner. I had a cage constructed that that sat in the window like a flower box that permitted him to go between the house and outside. The outside portion had a door of course for cleaning. After having him for over two years he finally figured out how to open the door and escaped.

I looked all over for him to no avail. I had given up finding him when I received a call from my mother whom at the time worked for the post office. She had heard someone talking in line about finding a ferret running down the street in my neighborhood. They had ferrets so they took him home.

I went by their house and sure enough there he was but I left him there. I was moving soon and was not sure if I would be able to keep him so it all worked out for the best.

Crazy little animals. My friend's got out one time and went to another friend's backyard inside the couch. His Rottweiler(friendly one) found it and he returned it to them. I hope the owner's see my postings, but a part of me hopes they just let it leave and don't claim it. The one thing I don't want is for someone to be searching for it to no avail...hence the signs I made.

That happens to me in the airport with little kids when I wear my dora the explorer shirt.

What would fustrate me is them coming back to get it when they lost it in the first place , Most people who lose animals are pretty careless . and probably dont give them the attention they need .

We had a recent guy on our "car" forums posting how he lost his pitbull cause everynight he would open the door and let it roam around outside on its on for a couple hours. ugh

Ferrets are sneaky though...they'll slip out without you ever seeing them go. I thought I lost one of my ferrets once. I looked all around for three hours and couldn't find him. I went to my bathroom and all of a sudden heard noises coming from under my sink...little punk didn't escape after all. Anytime you open the door(when they are free roaming, unlike mine now) you have to be careful not to have them sneak out or get squished in the door. I know if one of mine got out, I would not only be looking for it, but I would be posting signs everywhere. If someone just decided to keep it and I found out, I would be sooooo mad.

why dont you put a velcro strip on their back and just stick em to the wall or something when you have togo do something?

Heh , I know they are sneaky .. I have one but I keep a close eye on her ( esp since she isnt litter box trained ) but , everytime i open and close doors I look around before doing so .

Currently though the location of her isnt diffacult , she enjoys biting my toes as I walk around the house

Yeah, two of mine do that also. I've since bought them a cage(this thing is taller than me and has seven stories), so I know where they are at all times. They are such awesome little critters.

they remind me of cats that arent stupid heh. when i first got mine ( 2 years ago ) i thought they would bite like rats etc but only time they bite is all playfull , even though their teeth are like 8 guage needles.

Yeah, I have one that I got old and she was set in her ways. She doesn't mean to hurt, but she does. Man, I have some pucture wounds from that one. She used to be a lot worse, but she got me even today...

We have two ourselves, our older one is about 4, we just got back from the vet, shes started to lose her hair down by her tail, which is typically signs of adrenal tumors. She got a steroid shot and b12, in hopes to fix everything. If this doesnt help next month is the tests for the adrenal and pituatary.... These our are first, so if any of you have exp w/ this kinda thing let me know. any better foods then marshalls?

Marshall's food is not that great and much more expensive than necessary. I use Purina One kitten food. The major things looking for food are the fat protein, fiber, and ingredients. You want the first two to three ingredients listed to be meat. Rice, wheat, corn are no-nos for ferrets. Many people also try to stay away from fish, because that increases their smell. I lost a ferret to adrenal gland disease. I adopted these two ferrets from a guy who did not take care of them. They came to me over six years old and one had a bad case of adrenal gland disease, past the opportunity to operate. The other is still around and is the hardest biter I've ever seen from a ferret. I always recommend adoption, but make sure you are comfortable with the ferret. I thought of these two as my charity work, because very few people would have helped them.Even though she bites, I love her just the same. Nip adrenal disease early is the only hope, good job for looking out and going to the vet. I go to a guy who has 20 years experience with ferrets and his studies were focussed on ferrets. In fact, on his building has the shadow ofa dog and a cat like a regular vet has, but then a furry little ferret next to them. It's Shaffer Animal Hospital and he is great care for ferrets. If you're happy with your vet, stick with him/her. I've seen a list of best foods, by ingredient list and prot, fat, fib content. Actually, the best food is some type of dog food you can only get at local pet stores, not chains like Petsmart or Petland. Petland did just start carrying this new type of food that had great quantities and list of ingredients, I forget the name, but it was at the one in Waterford. It is a cat food. Most ferret specific food are crummy cat foods with a different label to charge 3X's the price. Their diet consists only of certain products, many of which are low in content or not included in the ferret foods out. You really want chicken, lamb, meat or meal. No soy, corn, etc listed above in the top 2 ingredients. No fiber over 3%. High fat and protein(I forget the exact minimum proprotions, but can get them if you can't find them out).

My ferret, Cracker (RIP) lost all the hair from his tail and looked like a big rat when adrenal gland disease took over. Feel for lumps around the hind legs and right on the back next to the hind legs, that's mostly where it starts.
