I did a 12 mile hike with some friends yesterday to Cherry Creek Falls at the Big Basin National Park near Santa Cruz, CA. The pics didn't all turn out, but I had a good time and recommend it for anyone up for a somewhat challenging day hike.
Ah, now I see 'em They look really cool, I love the effect with the water. I tried to to that once with a slower shutter speed on my camera but the pics came out waaaaay overexposed. Any tips on how to do it? I understand you using equipment much better than mine but I couldn't even come close, lol. Great shots!
thanks all. It was definitely a long hike, and we almost needed flashlights right at the end and made it back to the car before complete darkness by about 5-10 minutes. We were out from about 1:00 to 8:30, and I'm actually a little disappointed that I didn't go back and re-take the first shot at the end of the day when the sun was lower in the sky.
The pics were all taken with about a 1-1.5 sec exposure to get the effect with the water. I just adjusted the aperture to try to keep the water and sky from being overexposed (which was really hard in the early/mid afternoon) and that was really it. I did have to manually adjust the exposure level down quite a bit, because at the cam's nominal exposure level, the images were too bright overall for my taste. I also used a circular polarizing filter which helped cut down on glare.
It sounds like the next Trip is going to be to Yosemite
Thanks for the tip on the water effect. I tried to take a picture of a waterfall in Sedona Arizona but it was in the middle of the day in full sunlight. I didn't think to adjust the aperature to lower the exposure....maybe next time Thanks again for the advice and posting your pics.
