OT: Domain Name Purchase

Can anyone recommend me a company that has great CS and good deals for domain names?
So far I have tried Register.com, they have good CS but their prices are high and they said they "own" the domain names. (shady)
I spoke with Liberty Names of America, and they outright tell me that Register.com is lying, that it is impossible to "own" domain names because they are all in some sort of national database or something?

Anyways...any help is greatly appreciated!

You just need a registrar, or a hosting company as well? I use Melbourne IT for reg., but have a different host.

Try 1and1.com. I've used them for domain registration and hosting for the past 3 years.
