OT: How do you like living in orlando?

Have an interview in orlando coming up.

Just wondering how everyone likes living in orlando?

ie for a single guy :) haha

It's all relative to where you live now. Orlando isn't that great in my opinion. Having lived in multiple parts of the country, I find Orlando to be rather hollow compared to other cities. But I'd rather be here than some places as well.

good point. philly here.

i was down there for a medical conf. a few years ago and it just seemed like a big tourist destination.

yes i agree orlando is not on my list of fav cities, but the potential option i have down there im hoping can compensate :)

how about the rests.bars? is there a good art community?

I was born and raised in Orlando. I moved all over the place for school and I am getting ready to move back home to Orlando. Personally, I can't wait. But I'm a bit biased because it's my hometown.

The bars and restaurants are pretty good, especially considering that Orlando isn't that big of a city. The artist community I can't really comment on, but I can't imagine it's anything like, say, San Francisco. The last time I lived there, I hung out with a bunch of musicians who did pretty well. But I haven't lived in Orlando in a while, so it's tough for me to comment on the current state.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to come down for a conference and generalize the whole city as a big tourist destination. Ummm, that's kind of the only side you'll see during a conference. There are many areas that aren't "Disney-fied," trust me.

I think so many people move to Florida and expect it to be like one big Jimmy Buffett music video. It's a city with its good and bad, just like anywhere else. I also see a lot of people who move here and expect it to be just like where they moved from...it never is. Florida and Orlando are completely unique, unlike anywhere else in the country.

But I think it boils down to this...no matter where you go, you take yourself with you. If you're a generally happy person, you will find your rhythm and do just fine in Orlando. If not, well, you won't be happy anywhere you go.

Oh, and pleeeaaase don't move down here and complain about the heat...it is, after all, Florida and yep it's hot! :D

thanks very much. that was the kind of local insight i was looking for.

good point with the conference perspective though.

Well, I'm originally from NYC/CT area and have been spoiled with good food. I will say the restaurants here in Orlando aren't very good at all. Many many chain's and franchises popping up everywhere. You won't find a "Monk's Cafe" here. Also, it's not a place to walk around. Yes, you can walk to downtown but not get very far.

If you're in the medical industry and are considering FL Hosp, I would warn you that they take their "faith based" status very seriously, often times opening meetings with prayer etc. If you're the sort to be bothered by that, then think long and hard about that.

We do have a few decent bars, but anything downtown will be extremely crowded after about 10:30. Cops are very aggressive here as well, based on other cities I've lived in.

I would agree to not base your opinion on the disney area of town. It is very different from the rest of Orlando.

At the end of the day, if you were born and raised living up north, there will be some culture shock coming here.

On the upside, the beaches are great, snorkeling and diving is very convenient. Driving here seems to be much easier than up north. 4 hours to Miami is nothing like 4 hours to CT from Philly. It really does go back quick. The fauna is very interesting but it does get very wet and humid.

All in all, it's not horrible, though its certainly not somewhere I would return to live once I leave. We don't have any plans to leave for a few years at least if that says anything....

I do miss the seasons changing and such but don't miss the snow though some days having 6" of water in the backyard a few times a year isn't pleasant either.

hth

I have lived in Houston Tx, Las Vegas Nv (Nellis AFB), and Orlando. I feel that as far as culture goes Houston would be #1. I do like the bar scene here though (not church street...barf) but more like the indie bars. The music scene here is so so. It seems not many national acts come through here as opposed to Tx. I have been to all of the museums here. The fine arts museum has a thing called first Thursdays. Its a singles night. I have never been but I hear its pretty good stuff. There are various art festivals and whatnot here. It really all just depends on what you are into.
I have to say though that I have considered staying in Fl after I graduate.

josefdevaty.

THANKs very much. we have something like the first thurs also. thats exactly the kind of info. i was hoping for.

thank you again.

I have been the Fine Arts Center for singles night. I thought it was awesome. Im not much into art or people all dressed up talking about it but the band was awesome, the food was good and the motorcycles out front was cool. I would say the people there werent my cup of tea but it was a fun experiance.

in all honesty, I have never been to a place that has so many different things to do i such a short distance! When I was in Texas, they had some wicked cool stuff, but you had to drive sooooo far between them. I hate the cold so the weather here is much more to my liking! you are never more than 100 miles from the beach no matter where you are in the state. You'll find that most of your friends from new york and new jersey live here in Florida now and you'll alway bump into at least one person in the bar saying "youse guys grab me a biea, will ya?" :P

the additudes of the people around you vary greatly depending on where you are. people in the city are a bit more high strung and agitated, while the folks that live in the beach towns are more laid back, considerate, and move at a much slower pace.

there are great places to eat here as well, but you have to dig through the million franchises to find them. there are lots of mom and pop places that are fantastic, but kinda few and far between. if you like sea food, there's definitely no shortage of those restaurants!

so basically you'll have to find an area that more matches the way you like your lifestyle! we definately have plenty of ghettos, but we also have very relaxed, safe, and calm places as well.

I love it here! I'll definitely keep going off on Vacation, but I'll always come back to hang my hat!

I have never lived anywhere else was born and raised here in central FL. I would not be able to live away from the water even though we go on vacation to the Caribbean every year (more water).

I would say you need to take a serious look around before moving right into your first place. There are lots of suburbs as close or far as you want from the whole Disney/international drive area. (tourists everyone hates them) lol.

I can't say anything about the art life but as far as i know there seems to be a pretty good variety if your willing to look.

There are lots of neighborhoods that are tightly packed such as Baldwin Park where you can walk to everything or other suburbs where you have more space.

Like others have said you have access to other places that may be your cup of tea. Depending on what side of Orlando you live on Tampa can be within 45min-1.5hr same thing basically goes for beaches on either side.

I ride motorcycles and jetski's so FL it a pretty good place for me.

But i have no idea if it is where you would want to be.
