ot ,how many of u went abalone diving?

becareful with the abalone buying stuffs. I know people actually it's a restaurant in SJ got fine for hundred of thousand dollar... 5 of my friends do abalone driving, and they go about once a month. There is a quota on these abalone, I think it's 24 a year...and only 2 a day...minium 7in wide..these abalone are hugh, not like the one you normally see in store

If you buy to eat then it's fine. Restaurant are not allow to buy stuff off the street like that :D ... I would like to get some too if your friend selling :)

The restaurant you are talking about is a Vietnamese restaurant right??

I do ab diving. However I don't think you can give away the ab's. I think the rule is you have to consume what you catch. Getting cought in your car without an ab license could get your car taken away and fines.

Fish & Game is watching:bum: J/K Seriously though unless you buy aquacultured abalone it is illegal to buy wild specimens. I believe andyman is correct as well, abalone laws are very strict, and are not to be messed with. Get a stamp and a license, and post an OT "where to dive for abs".

Oh ok.. Sorry I thought it's ok to buy to eat because sometimes people sell wild caught abalone in China town on the street and nobody says anything :D.

i thought the same thing since u catch your limits with your license.it's not like u can make a bunches of money selling 3 that you catch.oh well.gl

Half the stuff in China town is smuggled :D Doesn't make it legal though ;)

The regs are 3 per day, with never more then 3 in possession at any time.

When I used to process abalone, before it was illegal to commercially harvest it sold for $80 a pound wholesale (processed center cut). I can't imagine how much you can sell it for now as you can't process the aquacultured animals like the wild animals due to size.

Article here says you can't buy or sell [California] abalone. You can give it away if it's obtained legally.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/10/01/BAGC792B3U1.DTL

Problem is that there are not enough small abalones off the coast, and DFG is trying to get the density higher so that the abalones can breed. They are broadcast spawners and even though there may be a lot of larger abalones in the water, they need to be at a minimum density to be able to reproduce. Seeing that there are few smaller abalones present means that they are not reproducing successfully.

In all my years of diving, I was told the opposite. You can't give it away. I just checked my card, it doesn't state that, so I'll dig up the regs on the website :D

Yeah, I was wondering about that and couldn't find the regs on the DFG site.

Well, you know SFGATE as far as reliable info! hehe :)

Are you suggesting an illegal activity :D

You can buy AC ones, but they're only little guys and don't taste like our CA reds (largest on the planet). We're not aloud to touch the white, pintos, blacks or pinks, just reds :(

I hear the blacks are making a HUGE comeback in Big Sur, maybe some day I can dive for them again down there :D
