OT ID protection

My wife and I don't use anything, but she got a call from her bank yesterday saying there were some weird charges on her credit card that all got declined. Plane tickets using Virgin Airlines, $1000 at Wal-mart, and some others. They're sending her a new card and a copy of all the charges so she can make sure that nothing got through.

So, be careful, and watch your statements everyone.

+1 on watching your statements. I save all my receipts and check against my statements each month. Actually found a charge that I didn't make. I also check my accounts online.

Last month got a call from Dell computer company asking if I purchased $1000worth of computers shipped to another address - of course I didn't so they stopped the order and I had to cancel that credit card as someone got the card number. I called credit card company asking if I had an option of having orders shipped to my home address only - they said no. I think that would prevent a lot of credit card fraud - but they don't seem to agree with me.

I don't use any of those services. IME/IMO, you can do at least as good a job protecting your identity as these overpriced services with minimal effort.

Most online vendors will only ship to the address on file with the credit card company using the AVS system. Unfortunately the credit card companies don't allow the credit card holder to opt into more restrictive security options. The one "feature" I hate more than anything is that some stores do not require a signature for low value purchases, and they don't check additional ID. I personally do not sign my credit card / bank card and instead put a statement that says "verify drivers license". I usually complain to a supervisor when I am able to make a purchase and they do not verify it.
