OT: Killing a Metric Fudgeton of Ants

+4 Amdro. Works EVERY time and none of my 6 weeiner dogs or two great danes have ever eaten it. Is doesn't take much and it's kind of fun to watch the little dummies take their queen this death food. lol
(ok, that may be a cruel way of putting it)

Actually that's a perfect way of putting it. I love to watch...15 -20 minutes and the little pile of yellow granules you put down are gone...death to the queen!

now I wish I had some ants...

This technique works on most pest insects and weeds. Always a satisfying entertainment value. Although, if you can get it, liquid Nitrogen sprayed on them is cool(pun intended) too, instant frosty. Dry ice on the hill is also another fun way to spend a couple of hours.

It isn't a poison per say. It does not kill directly and also does not migrate away from the area. It disrupts the lifecycle of certain types of insects. Because it sticks around that also makes it a good longterm solution. If you follow the mixing guidelines for preventative measures it will be in a very low concentration and be supposedly ok to come in contact with. It also is water soluble and does not sit on the surface for kids or animals to get into accidentally. If other ants come in and occupy the area they will get the terminex on them, and pass it onto the new ant larvea and prevent them from transforming into adults. I normally avoid all chemicals in my yard but there is a time that everyone must compromise and fire ants are it for me! It is the only thing I have found that takes them out longterm. All the other ant baits/foods work shorterm on that hill, but they just move across the yard or another colony moves in and you have to start over again.
Problem with terminex is that it has a half life of like a billion years (yes that's an exaggeration)! That spot will be poisoned for a long long time.

Also one of those aerosol bottles of keyboard cleaner turned upside down is fun as well. easier to get a hold of than liquid nitrogen.

I cant believe somebody hasnt suggested a magnifying glass on a sunny day ? Good times. One for each hand and if youre coordinated enough :)

I had the worst ant problem last year. Millions of them. Mine had a large orange thorax and were really fast, not fire ants. Tried eveything and finally called an exterminator who used termador (for termites) on and around the mounds. Gone within 1 week and never have been back.

DIO TENACIOUS EARTH will kill ants

Tenacious Earth is quite an amazing thing. From personal experience, it is a white powder resembling flour. It is a pure powder which is harmless to human bodies, and other large organisms. (BUT i would say to avoid breathing it.) And it is completely natural.

When applied to the skin of say a dog, the microscopic pieces of the Tenacious Earth cut and shred the fleas and mites on the skin of the dog. But does not harm the dog since its skin is strong enough to take the microscopic blades of the Tenacious Earth.

When applied to the diet of say a goat, the microscopic pieces of the Tenacious Earth cut and shred the worms, and other parasites inside the intestinal tract of the goat. But does not harm the goat since the lining of the intestine wall is strong enough to take the microscopic blades of the Tenacious Earth.

Another name which i have heard Tenacious Earth called is "Dio Tenacious Earth" or "Di Tenacious Earth" and should be found in your local farm supply store.

Either way, its a cheap and organic way to de-flea and de-worm your critters.

That's too slow. We live in the age of high throughput, man!

OK, fine.

how about a trip to the dollar store for a couple dozen JUMBO magnifying glasses, get some PVC, some glue, some nuts and bolts, and some lawnmower wheels. Then make an array out of all those magnifying glasses. Make it so you can wheel it on out there, tilt/adjust them all at once to angle for terrain, sun direction and target area. Presto! Scorched earth/ants.

Im thinking you do it right, probably going to need a welding helmet and some oven mitts.

One of Dave The Garden Guys' tricks; borrowed from his website:
Indoor and Outdoor Ant Control
Supplies:
"¢ 1/2 cup Cream of Wheat
Instructions:
Place a dish of Cream of Wheat where the ants can access it.
Note: After they eat it, the cereal expands and the ants will explode.

That is the same stuff I was talking about! If you look online some not so honest exterminators will sell you a concentrated bottle so you can DIY with it.

Now you're cooking with gas!
