I need to have a few rooms done in my house and I was wondering if anyone here does travertine floor installs or has the hookup!

smart man for not doing it yourself.

I'm 1/4 finished tiling my living room and dining room. I spent all day yesterday on it. My fanny hurts.

How many sq. ft? Furniture needs to be moved? Are you getting quoted for full mud set or medium bed install?

mud set and only 400 sq ft, and nope zero furniture to move

rip up carpets and then clean up and install the new travertine

Wow expensive, i say DIY, i tiled my whole house it was easy, not perfect but best i could do with a crooked house and i taught myself.

think you mean barfish, i own a floor restoration com. i dont do installs though. i can give my installer a call and see what he would charge. you will save a chunk removing the carpet and tac strips yourself, they are prob. charging 1.5 to 2 a sq. for that alone.

yeap, isn't the going rate for tile install like $3/ sq.ft? I'm installing approx 550 sq. ft. right now, would've cost me close to $2k to install.

Plus, with travertine, since they're usually butt-up against eachother instead of using a grout line, the floor must be pretty close to perfectly level for the tiles to be all level too, so if your slab has ANY dips or anything like that, it might need to be fixed.

I didn't do any of that to my slab, but my neighbors had an installer do that, and the guys spent 3 days leveling their slab. The dust from their house littered the neighborhood, and apparently took a month to fully clean from inside the house. Tile looks fantastic though.

I just did my master bath, walls and floor. IF you take your time to do it right, it can be very rewarding, but it also takes considerably longer than hiring someone. I even showed my wife how to do it and made her use the level on every piece - she had a blast. Now she takes pride and ownership in it.

It's not that difficult. Especially if you're only replacing carpet. Just take breaks and stretch often. If your floor has dips (it will), you can use a leveling product that will help you out. Check out some sites online (johnbridge is a good tile diy site IMO) before jumping in.

However, if you think your time is worth the $2+k by not doing it, $2k's not that bad for stone. I was getting estimates for my bath around $5-6/sf. If you use a tile guy - check him out GOOD beforehand.

-good luck

It takes different qualities and craftsmanship to install tile vs. stone, especially butt edge stone.
Cobra- About $2500-2800 should be the "going" price for a reputable installer/floor contractor, but should include mud, thinset, and grout. Sealers,if not a polished marble or stone, would be more but that is easy to do yourself. If you try to find the cheapest guy out there then you will wish that you just installed the floors yourself-meaning mess them up and end up with crooked, unlevel floors, which may be ok for some.
Times are tight now. You might be able to find someone qualified for a bit cheaper.
good luck

agreed on taking your time. And yes, IIRC, travertine needs to be sealed as would slate or other stone aside from polished granite or marble.
If you decide to do it yourself, a wet saw is a big help, but make sure to spend the money on a good stone blade. If you were doing ceramic or porcelain tile I'd suggest a score cutter, but I don't think those work on travertine.

so far i have gotten the best qoute of 1080 to just do the labor of 240 sq ft to be exact!

And i went to stone-mart to buy the travertine, they had a huge selection and premium tavertine wasnt too bad in price
