The R. howesii invasion article poses an interesting issue.

All around the world we intentionally sink ships to promote coral reef bulding where there is none or want to extend already existing areas. Even to the point that some have been using tires and old building and bridge tear downs. My point from the article is I wonder what markers are apparent of when an invasive species will instead propagate rather than the desired species? Next is if there's a "cycle" to their development and whether it would just run it's course and the desired ones will rebond.
