OT: Need a good mechanic

Sorry for yet another OT thread.

My fiancee's PT Cruiser is in need of new front wheel bearings. I would do them myself, just that they are pressed in and I don't have access to a press.

Back in Illinois, I had plenty of friends with shops that I could do work in and this would be no problem.

Does anyone either work in a shop (or own one) or know of a good, friendly shop that would not have a problem with me bringing in the bearing hubs and new bearings and just pressing them in for me for a small fee?

If you have a shop or a press, there is a good frag in it for you!!

hey i would do it for you but i'm out of the business. but i can give a heads up on the price you should be paying in the ball park.

Front Wheel Bearing oem part number (4668442AA) $74.95 each


Front Suspension
One Side B warranty time1.1 standard time 1.3
Includes: R&I Knuckle. Does Not Include: Wheel Alignment.

Each Additional B 0.0 0.1 Notes

so total in part should be 149.90
labor 2.6 hours plus .3 hours add-on total 2.9 hours x the local labor rate

plus the aligment which should cost no more the 60.00
(on a side note make sure that you get a thrust angle aligment)

so 210.00+ i would say no more than 232.00 in labor grand total

442.00


hpoes this helps. remember this is a ballpark figure. just don't want to see you get screwed. thats one of the reasons i got out of the business. to many bad people giving us a bad name and my pay was the victim.

and as far as finding a place mike can hook you up and will send you to the correct people. also try to buy oem parts. they will last much longer and they are easier to install

Another option since there are a ton of those things in salvage (wrecked), you could just go to a salvage and buy the parts you need for way less than $400 if you can't find a place to press new ones yourself.

I dont know if you live close to me or not, but 1 of my best friends has a press we can use. Its should only take a few mins to them in. He wont charge anything im sure.

May take you up on that. Got a slow radiator leak that I have not had time to chase down. May be easier to replace the radiator than remove it, search for the leak, patch it, put it back in and then hope it holds. Been a problem ever since I hit a deer last April on the interstate. The deer was already dead in the middle of the road....sent the car airborne for a few seconds. Talk about having the c**p scared out of you at 4am!!

Been having AC problems ever since then too....but that is a different issue.

Skinnyjoe, autozone has replacement bearings for $18 each (valucraft) or $30 each (Timken). $75 each seems a bit steep.

Lusenut2, I am in the south-east part of town. South of the airport, just south of 417 (near World Wide Corals if that helps). Where are you at?

I am going to have the entire hub assemblies with me, the bearings are pressed in and out. I have no way to get them out. Should come out with no problem with a press.

on the bearing prices thats oem that's why i posted it several times. it's like buying a rio pump for a 220 gallon tank that you got 5,000 into it. what kinda warrranty do you get with the bearings? if you go to a dealership they usually give you a 1 year warranty on parts and labor. if the bearing from autozone etc go out guess what you are right back in the same ball game. as far as the press goes just make sure you have the correct adapters or you can seperate the outer race from the inner race. pressing is not hard to do if you have the right tools. here are the tool oem numbers and you might get them to loan the tools from autozone is you decide to go there.
