OT: Need Computer help

I need some computer help. I'm running a compaq pressario SR1730T desktop. I have windows xp home on the computer and all the recovery data that is normally burned to a cd is actually burned to my hard disk.

Thursday I downloaded and installed windows xp sp 3 on my computer, restarted and everything seemed ok. Yesterday I came home from work to see the computer frozen on my screensaver. I tried restarting but I couldn't get the windows recovery console to boot and I couldn't get windows to boot.

When I boot to windows two things happen. The computer either gets to the windows startup screen and then reboots or it will tell me the windows/system folder is corrupt and will halt.

When I try to boot into the recovery console I get blue screen errors:
0x0000008E and
0x0000004E.

I do not have a recovery cd because they burned everything to the hard drive which I cannot access right now. HP wants to sell me the recovery cd for $30.

I do have everything backed up on my external harddrive, been manually backing things up for about a year now. My wife downloads mp3s on itunes and I have been backing those up as well, but I have not recently backed it up. I don't see an issue of losing a few mp3s because she does have them on her ipod. My issue is I just want to get into windows for a minute or two to deactivate itunes from our computer and move a few pictures i have saved on our desktop to my external harddrive.

Can anyone help?

PS, I tried putting a windows xp sp2 installation disk i have in to see if i can just have it do an install and I get a blue screen saying one of the .sys files is corrupt. I ran a smart support test on my harddrive and it passed with 0 errors.

If your original backup system is on a seperate partition you can change the boot order in the bios. If not I'm not sure how to get there.

Well, instead of them giving me a restore cd they burned it to my hard disk on a seperate partition. I was manually copying files from my main hard drive to my external hard drive so I don't have any partition that is operating that i can boot to.

I ran into this the other day myself I had to unplug the other hard drive then it came up on that hard drive and fixed it self basically then I plugged the other hard drive back in and things have been fine.
