OT: Need help translating computer specs

Simplicity is bliss. The bottom line is in my old age I get tired of playing around with Windows. Vista is a mess. Period.

4 months after initial launch...I've never had to wait.

What I love about my Mac most- security. No nonsense. No garbage. 90% of PCs are worthless after 4 months of web use with every spyware and trojan they've picked up.
Macs are as fast and fluid as the day you buy them. Linux is a beautiful thing :p

I should also say that I never liked macs for the longest time. They were really more like toys back in the day. The latest generations are a different story.

Don't lie! Every game released takes extra time from launch to be ported to mac, unless things have changed in the few years since I was a big FPS guy or you're buying games long after release anyways.

I'm not saying this about you, but the majority of people who say that about Vista... haven't even touched Vista. I run it on my laptop, I hated it at first because they changed their folder/menu locations/format that I've known and used for 8 years or so. Once I got past that (something the average user I'm sure doesn't care about) I was fine and I thoroughly enjoy it. I've also heard people complain they don't like the look of Vista, you can make it look exactly like XP.

A Mac would be nice, but all the other laptops are PC, and the IPods are all formatted for PC. I just don't know if it would be worth the changeover, plus Macs are a good deal more expensive I think.

If the 8800 video card is the way to go, I think I could wait a few months for the price to come down a bit. As long as I buy the computer this year, I can apply it to my current year's taxes. And Fallout 3 doesn't come out until October anyways. I'll have a better idea what specs the game needs. As for playing The Witcher, which I just got, I can always hold off on it for the time being. A better computer will just make it run even faster when I'm ready to play it.

I'm finding this computer conversation from so many experts in the field stimulating!

If you are specifically interested in one or two games, I would suggest:

talk to the vendor you will be buying from and ask them to demo the most demanding game you want to play on the machine you want to buy. You will know then if it will be to your satisfaction or not. Seeing is believing in this case. If the salesman says no, then talk to the manager. A good store manager won't miss out on a sale if you make it clear that as long as the game plays very well, you will buy.

I will be upgrading sometime soon too, as my current desktop is too slow for any game that came out in the last two years. Then again I buy a 350$ after rebate emachine and it has played everything great I have wanted up until recently.

My experience is like others said: was once a time when building your own saved lots of money and gave you options but no more. Find a machine that works for you and buy it.

You should expect to spend between 700$ and 1000$ to get a machne to play the two games you mentioned.

As to you original question: who knows... so many choices these days it is impossible to figure out. I think that is the way these vendors want it. The more confused we are, the more we just buy the latest and greatest so we don't have to think about it.

Good luck, Kevin

So, I got a new old computer. My father passed away and I inherited a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz, 922 MB RAM, 16 GB hard drive. It's a good bit better than the dinosaur that I had, but it doesn't have enough RAM (min 1 GB) or video card (NVIDIA 6600 or better) to run the game. So, now for some component shopping....

I had a post about trading computer components for frags, but apparently, I was not aware that one could not post a trade for any non-reef item even for reef-related items, so the post was deleted. Apologies for violating RC trading guidelines. It was out of ignorance after all.

I dropped out of the computer geek rat race a few years ago after I built my current system, but jumped back into the loop briefly to build a college pc for my sister-in-law (which was done for $400 not including external peripherals, monitor, or Windows XP, so add another 300-350 for those). It still cracks me up how you state what you want to do and you still get off base and/or over the top answers. So you got a P4? Not to depress you about your recent purchase, but the P4's are old news, and a lot of the newer games are recommending dual core processors.... lucky for me I don't game anymore (I have a 3 yr old instead).

2GB of ram. Find out what kind is in there, and what the maximum ram speed your motherboard will support. If it's regular DDR ram then have fun, you'll spend twice as much on old stuff. If it's DDR2 then you're in luck. Either way, find out what kind is already in there, if it's a single 1gb stick and you can find one speced the same (open the case, look for a sticker on the side of the ram stick. You're looking for brand, speed, and if you're really particular CAS latency) so if you can find one the same get one more stick as a few of the P4 motherboards were capable of running in dual channel mode, which will help you some.

Next check what kind of slots you have to shove a video card into, AGP would be the norm around the P4 era, and is getting a little harder to find, if you're lucky and you get a PCI express slot, then you have a few more options... but be wary because the first generation of PCI express cards were slower than the current 16x and I'm not sure that they're interchangeable.

Oh, and you meant a 160gb HD.... right?

edit: and buy from newegg.com... prices are generally half what you'd find it in a store around here for, and they have a warehouse in NJ so the basic shipping method half the time you get it 24hrs from the time you hit "Place order."

No, it's a sixteen GB hard drive. Hard to believe.

Yeah, P4's are old news. And I've resigned myself to not getting the latest and greatest games. Actually, Fallout 3 is about the only one I would want to get. But the way I go through games-- one every 2-3 years-- by the time I'm done with The Witcher if I ever get to play it, processors will be up to Intel 10-Core or something.

Actually, game playing is not high on my list of priorities. It would be nice to play this game and have a better computer, but I think I'll be spending my money in other ways. I'll look around for a used video card and more ram if it will be compatible with my system. If not, I can just use this clunker until it's so slow compared to everything else that I'll be forced to upgrade.
