Shopping for my first plasma HDTV, what should I be looking for?

Kind of leaning toward the Pioneer Elite model.

Thanks,

Pioneer Elite is great. For about 80% of the price, you can get Panasonic or NEC and the quality is almost the same.

i would just go and see in the store what picture you like the best. on eof my freinds bought an outrageously priced plasma and I like the picture on my parents sony better then his pioneer. but to each is own.

DO RESEARCH! there are actually only (I believe) 3 companies that actually make plasma TV's. All the other companies just buy their TV's off the same manufacterer. Then those companies just add features to the TVs.
So a significantly cheaper model will have the same picture quality as the most expensive.
I do recall that sony is a buyer of TV's and not a manufacterer.

i heard pioneers are the best if you have to go with plasma. Have you thought about anything else? maybe DLP or LCD? They're all supposed to be the same quality pretty much unless you get the pioneer elite which supports 1080p. I have a 42 inch LCD and i can't tell the difference between that and a DLP or a plasma at HI Def.

do research on http://www.avsforum.com/ they have ton of information on plasma. As Bergamer said, only a few companies make their own glass such as: LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Phillips and Fujitsu. If I was you, I will wait for a true 1080 HD because most of them out there has 768 native resolution.

the problem with waiting for 1080p is that no one will be broadcasting in this resolution for quite a while. by the time it is picked up by the major satellite and/or cable companies, you might as well buy a new tv.

Stick with panasonic for plasmas. They consistently rate much higher than other brands.

i totally agree...

try ken kranes...they'll give a pretty good deal

another tip: if you want a plasma then get a 42'' or higher..on the other hand...if you want a lcd tv then get a 37'' or lower...that will be your best bet for clarity and performance.

good luck~!

i am in the biz a nec monitor is the same as a pioneer elite commercial model it is made by nec it's just a pioneer frame....pioneer elite in my professional opinion is the best plasma out better than fujitsu

Which NEC model is the similar to the Pioneer Elite?

Unfortunately, buying a tv nowadays can be a bit like reefing. You can go mad trying to research every little bit of information, deal, tweak, etc... or you can go with a trusted setup and be done with it.

Yes, Pio=NEC, HP=Panny... it's all an incestuous and terrible mess that will give you a headache looking for the best deal. I'd say if you don't want to obsess over the purchase buy a Pioneer or Panasonic, kick back, and enjoy a nice movie or a program in HD. Otherwise, head over to avsforum and be prepared for indecision 2006, 2007...
