Plasma burn in is a thing of the past. You should be able to find a 50" plasma for $1700. Panasonics are a great choice and one of the higher rated plasmas. I have a Toshiba that has panny glass and can be found for around $1600 for a 50". The Vizio's are nice too - I got one for my dad last year and it looks great - the only drawback is that it doesn't have discrete inputs so programming a universal remote can be difficult.

If you want more informatio you can check out www.avsforums.com They even have a local thread in the HD programming section.

Which 50" plasma would you recommend?

My brother has a Mits DLP and the bulb just went out after a year, he said a replacement bulb is $200 and easy to replace. He had bought the extended warranty so his first 2 bulbs are included, I have had a HD projection set from Panasonic for the last 2 years and have enjoyed it, pictures great and it has an HDMI imput so I am good for a few more years.

I researched TV's for awhile before I got the set and was going to get a DLP but they were out of my price range, now you can get one for what I paid for my projection. If I was to buy a TV now I would get one of the projection LCD's, same footprint as the DLP's and the picture looks great to me. I would stay away from DLP's cause of the bulb maintanence issue and plasma's because I talked to a TV repair guy who said that the plasma's dont last long.

another note: when buying a TV be sure to spring for the extended warranty...they give you bulbs

my best buy 4 year was 249.99...but if you plan on having the TV for more than 4 years you can actually buy an additional warranty at the end of that term

so basically you will have 8 years of unlimited bulbs/parts/labor for 500 bucks
