That is an easy job and usually very cheap for example I did the brakes on my daughters car for about $120 in parts that included front brake pads/rotors and flexible brake hoses the rear got new shoes/springs and mounting hardware.
If you have a garage I might be able to help you out.
With calipers included and the shop doing the work I don't think that is out of line for even the cheapest car. Most rear brake pads are $15-30, the rotors run anywhere from $20-80 each (need 2) and the calipers can run anywhere from $30- 125 each.
Throw in a couple hours of labor at $50-90 each and you saved your hands from being nicked up and dirty, you stay warm and the job is done.

Take your truck to Autozone and they will read ODBII codes for free the problem might be minor. At very least you will have an idea about where the problem is and know if an estimate is BS.Also just as C-SEA is a great resource to learn about the salt water hobby a google search for Chevy forums followed by a search of the forum for the ODBII code failure would give you a great idea about what your problem is and how to fix it.
One of my co-workers had a problem with his daughters contour that the dealership billed him over $500 attempting to fix and said a $1600 ccat converter replacent was next.I spent 30 minutes on a Ford forum and found that one of 4 O2 sensors fail on that model and can be replaced or simulated with about $5 of parts from radio shack.
Guess which fix a college student and her cash strapped old man went with.
The originator of the thread listed his business as pizza havind delivered pizza before I can appreciate the need ti be economical.
Rear brakes only apply 20 percent of the stopping capacity of a vehicle $400+ is reasonable for a service garage but for someone trying to get by on a tight budget it is tough.Dependng on the make/model/year I bet that job could be done for well under $100.Most service shops have their people working on a low base salary with a bonus system that rewards high $$$ sales.
You don't need to do both. If one is bad it doesn't mean the other is or will be anytime soon. Brake calipers normally last 15-20 years and your car is only 7-8 years old.
you more than likely can rebuild the the caliper for around $15 and only do the one that is bad. $00 is not a bad price for a shop but with all the people around out of work i would never suggest taking anything to a shop.
