OT: setting up hd...

Just got a new 50inch plasma.. man i got to stop doing things like this. Well i got direct tv and friend gave me his extra hd receiver. I want to hook this bad boy up to my new tv but im little lost. I got all the cables hooked up and my direct tvv hooked up to the box but now the cable i had from my old direct tv box that went to my tv i don't see a place to put it on my hd receiver..? Do i even need too? Do the hdmi cables take its place? Once i call direct tv to access the receiver and hd channels the picture will then come up?

The Hdmi cable has digital Audio and Video information. It is a "all in one" solution so you will not need your pervious cables.

DId you just get the Receiver? You need a diffrent dish then just the normal one!

What kind of TV is it? I have a Panasonic and let me tell you, that thing is amazing!!! Although, my only regret is not getting the 58"

Congratulations on the buy! HD tv is truly awesome.

When purchasing cables for the TV, check out www.monoprice.com. You will save HUNDREDS of dollars buying there vs a retail store for your accessories.

Also consider just using a roof antenna for your HD signal. All the local stations are broadcasting HD over the air. With a one time purchase of a $80 HD antenna shipped to my door, I now have free HD local channels. I don't need all the other channels provided by a satellite, nor do I need the $80/month bill.

Do not just hook up roof antenna! you need Cable of some sort.

NO cable means no ESPN/Monday night football and no NFL network. YOu cannot live without those channels. Ok i cannot live without those channels

what ever i pay it is so worth it. ESPN, NFL newtwork, ESPN news, Discovery channel. MTV cause i like some shoes on there, Like Scarred. Pimp my Ride, Cribs. A&E

Man, its all about the HD! I bought my first HD TV close to 5 years ago. Great investment.


Davey is right, if you want more than just local channels, you'll need more than the antenna. Direct TV is the best way to go, but comcast is the easiest. With DTV you need the HD dish, the HD receiver and the HDTV. With comcast, all you need is the TV. With that said, I am so tired of dealing with the crooks at CC, I'm getting ready to switch over to DTV.

I would second the full HD lineup! Some shows on the local channels look ok, but they are nothing compared to ESPN HD and all of the rest!!! I hate the time that I have to watch Standard def now!!!

We got DishNetwork with HD a couple weeks ago and I can't take my eyes off it. The outdoor and underwater stuff on Science ChannelHD, Discovery HD, Nat Geo HD, HistHD, MHD, and cooking on FineLiving, Food NetworkHD, concerts in HD on some other channels with Dolby Surround 5.1 and the even better PCM audio...it's all stunning.

I've got to get back to some of my favorite diving locales to shoot some HD video so I can watch it in widescreen HD.

I haven't watched much sports on TV in awhile but in HD it's easy to see why people like it so much.


For those considering it... Comcast has only minimal channels in HD despite their lying ads, and their monthy rates are higher for a given level of programming than either of the satelite providers.

DirecTV and Dish Network offer equivalent channels for the same monthly fees, but DirecTV makes you pay $199 up front for equipment. DishNetwork has no upfront costs. Both offer big discounts during the early months of service. DVR is so much better than a VCR. If you already have cables inside your house they are used to access each TV (4 hookups are included).

Our DishNetwork is bundled with ATT DSL and wireless for an additional discount and it's all on one bill.
