OT: Stay Away from the Macbook

If anyone is interested in the macbook I suggest holding off until they fix their heating issues and problems with the keyboard. I bought it the day it came out and two days later I had a letter fall off the keyboard. Took it back on a saturday, had the key replaced to have another one fall of on sunday. I went back on Monday to find out how to get the problem resolved. I went at 10am to have them tell me I had to get the entire keyboard replaced, but I had to come back at 2pm because I didn't have an appointment with the genius bar. I told them I didn't have time to be wasting and asked for a new one. The sales clerk told me I had to pay a 10% restocking fee since they couldn't resell it. I was really losing my patience for having to pay extra for a defective product. I was about to make a scene, but they decided to replace it since it wasn't my fault. It's a week later and another letter has fallen off of the replacement and my enter key is giving out too. This really suxs because I bought the computer for my girlfriend and she's mad that I'm going to get a refund on the computer. She told me I was going to take the money and buy fishes and it wasn't fair. LOL

Didnt your mother teach you better, Ron always dry your hands after operating your tanks. That salt can be the devil once it gets on those keys. (IME);)

I had problems with the macbook. The macbook pro is having problems with freezing, found a site with list of problems since it came out.

Macbook Problems: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macbook/index.html
Macbook Pro Problems: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macbookpro/topic4132.html

It's really sad because I didn't think of waiting for reviews on it. It was an impulse buy since I was upgrading to a bigger tank and I didn't want her to nag at me. Which actually worked, but now I have to return it, since I don't want to deal with the hassle.

LOL. I didn't cause the problems. But I've tried to unplug some wires before drying my hands, after taking my hands out of the tank to get shocked.

I just picked up the black one but no problems as of yet. I only bought it because we are going on vacation and I want to be able to download photos on the ship. Now I just need a camera. Apple traditionaly has less problems than other computer companies, but sometimes they do have issues. I will not be using the Macbook as my primary computer so I doubt it will get much use. I got the extended warranty. Just in case.

I bought the macbook because I've been happy with Apple's line of computers. I started out a couple of years ago with an 800mhz imac and haven't had any single problems with it. I think I have had it for almost 5 years and handed it down to my brother in highschool. I was thinking of starting a graphic design company and went out to buy the G5 two years ago that one was faulty out of the box. One of the dual processors was burned out and there was a problem with the cooling fans. I got a new one and it's been awesome every since. I like the fact that everything is built into the macbook, you can take and record videos of yourself with the built in camera, the problem is the dumb keys keep falling off and I opted out of the extended warranty because I didn't think I would have any problems.

Apple is notorious for having major issues with new products. They correct them quickly, but the first batch is often troublesome. Apple is usually very good about correcting any problems -- providing they admit it. Or at least they used to be; I haven't deal with the company in a long time.

If you are going to a big box store, you're not going to get good service no matter what you buy. A small shop that is an Apple authorizer reseller AND an Apple authorized service center is your best bet (are there any of those even left anymore?), especially if they have been around for a while. Apple trusts these guys and will pretty much do whatever they say needs to be done to get a problem fixed. You can take your MacBook in for repair to any authorized service center; it doesn't have to be where you bought it.

Or else deal direct with Apple. If you deal direct with Apple, you're going to have a time delay, though.

LA Computer company in Anaheim near the Kramer Glassell exit on the 91 freeway.

After cooling off, I have decided to take it to an authorized dealer. I've dealt with Mac Solutions and Mac Enthusiasts in the past and had great service. Mac Enthusiasts is a dealer and authorized service center.

And Greg is fast on the recommendation!

I thought MacSolutions was a grey marketter... maybe my memory is wrong or maybe they've gone legit.

Good luck -- if you're a Mac fan, establishing a relationshop with a small shop will pay off in the long run, even if you spend a few bucks more here and there. But on systems itself, Apple is pretty rigid about retail pricing, so they should be the same although a big box shop might throw in some "freebies" to circumvent the standard pricing.

Oh man, guys used to work for Apple, I was an MG that should not have happened to you. The stores have far better customer service than that.

Also, Greg awesome that you bought a mac.

I have to disaggree with the service. I just got back and I'm furious. The clerk told me I was going to have to pay a restocking fee for the computer, I told him I wasn't going to if it was defective. Even the manager told me I had to pay the restocking fee. The SOB didn't even care I showed him on a discussion on the web people having the same problem, since it wasn't on the apple site. I understand paying a restocking fee for something you changed your mind about, but paying a restocking fee for a defective product doesn't seem fair. I have 7 days left on the second computer for the 14 day policy. I had spoke to apple and they told me to take it in for a replacement, but all they did was end up replacing the key. The manager tried to imply I broke off the key. Hopefully I'm not crazy and more people come forward with broken keys. I am not prepared to pay the 15% restocking fee, it's ridiculous.

You are coming up against the store's policy here, not Apple's. Apple's policy is to repair only, so the store can't return it or they take the $$$ hit from Apple. In that case, they have to repair it and sell it as a markdown -- they can't return it to Apple.

You have a couple of options:
-Call Apple and get an RMA number. The store should then be able to return to Apple with no $$$ hit, although the store idiot may not know this and probably won't believe you.
-Take it to an authorized Apple repair center to get the repair properly done.

Either way, I would call Apple and formally lodge a complaint about their authorized reseller. In writing is preferred.

I agree. Since it is not your fault, you should have gotten a replacement no questions asked. Even if it is just the key and this is the 2nd time it happened, I would demand a replacement for the entire laptop. It is ridiculous if a company does not stand behind their product.

A note on the 15% restocking fee. You mentioned above that the guy said that they could not resell it...that is a load of bull. That is what the 15% restocking fee is for. To prepare the product to get fixed/repackaged and resell again as either used or refurbished. They even have a refurbished section in the store and online.

Have you tried going to another apple store? Also I would write a letter to corporate complaining about the product and the lack of customer service at the particular store in assisting you to your satisfaction. As with any company there are the good people to deal with, and there are those that you avoid like the plague.

If there is a problem with a product you should get a replacement or get it fixed free of cost no questions asked period as long as it is in a reasonably time frame of purchase.

That was not the store that I worked at. The company's policy at least when I was there for 3 years was that a defective unit could be returned within 14 days. Back in the day every item had a 10% restock charge to wipe the drive and such. Today any iPod, or CPU has the 10% charge. Machines that are determined to be DOA were immediately replaced. Keyboards are considered to be cosemetic. I would suggest going to another store, maybe South Coast Plaza and explain your situation to them. Inform them that you were passionate about the product yet shocked with the lack of customer service. If you choose that route speak to the Manager on Duty. That store has an excellent management staff that should take care of you.

Thanks I will do that. I posted 15%, but I think it's 10% restocking fee.
