CORAL GABLES, Fla. - University of Miami head football coach Randy Shannon announced tonight that offensive coordinator Patrick Nix has been relieved of his duties effective immediately.

In making the announcement Shannon said, "It is my obligation to review all aspects of the program and make decisions as to how we can improve as a football team."

Nix has been the Hurricanes' offensive coordinator the past two years after working in the same capacity at Georgia Tech.

Three Canes Players To Leave University

After losing in Saturday night's Emerald Bowl, three Miami Hurricanes are saying goodbye to the program. The university will grant releases to running back Shawnbrey McNeal and tight end Daniel Adderley in order for them to transfer to other schools.

Miami coach Randy Shannon said Sunday he isn't sure which schools the players will chose. McNeal, who has an ailing mother and a small child to take care of in his native Texas, is believed to be considering enrolling at TCU.

McNeal's decision to leave was a difficult one, Shannon said.

"He came to me about two or three weeks ago and said he's got some real family problems and feels like he needs to go back home and be closer with his mom," Shannon said. "I think that's been really bothering him because his mom isn't doing very well."

Adderley will likely return to South Carolina, his home state, Shannon said.

McNeal had 13 carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season. Adderley did not record any stats.

Also Sunday, Shannon said defensive back Anthony Reddick -- who could have sought to play one more season at Miami if he wanted after missing last year with a knee injury, something that plagued him during his five years with the Hurricanes -- will leave with hopes of playing in the NFL next season.

Reddick appeared in all 13 games this season, starting 11, and finished with 67 tackles, which was second-best on the team behind sixth-year senior linebacker Glenn Cook's 76.

Miami (7-6) finished the season with a 24-17 loss to Cal in the Emerald Bowl on Saturday night.

Reddick could be the only Miami player to leave for the NFL with eligibility remaining this season.

Running backs Graig Cooper and Javarris James, along with offensive lineman Jason Fox, all planned to ask the NFL for their potential draft status.

Cooper chose not to send in the paperwork and both James and Fox have said they will be back with the Hurricanes next season.

I'm not sure if it's the offensive coordinator or the head coach, but someone needs to go.

I'm personally not sold on Shannon.

I am sold on Shannon, let me tell you talent wins and he's getting it. Remember Butch wasnt a good gameday coach, but he could recruit the heck out of the area, much like Shannon. Nix did have to go, he stunk!! In no time, we'll see miami in prominence. Shannon also brings discipline which is something this team hasnt seen for a long time!!

First let me say that I'm a BIG canes fan. Now with that being said you are right "talent wins games" but that talent has to coached and from what I've seen the coaching staff is lacking. True, Miami has not had the players the last couple of years but the players they've had have not produced. This is the head coach's job.

Some of the coaching decisions and play calling have been absolutely terrible. Remember the Georgia Tech game? The Canes were clearly not prepared and out coached. Thanks god the Cal coaches were in la la land because if they would have run the ball the Canes would been blown out like the Georgia Tech game.

The talent is there but can this coaching staff take these former High school ballers to the next level? at this point it's not looking like it.

I sure hope I'm wrong.

Also not sold on Shannon. I do agree with his discipline tactics even suspending players when necessary. But it would be nice to see him get a little more excited about the game instead of standing on the sideline with his arms crossed looking like he can't wait to get home. Should take a few pointers from Sparano.

I agree with most of what was said, but especially that he is similar to Butch. Not good on gameday but has such good talent that he can win anyway.
However, that being said the clock management was a major issue in the loss to Cal and that worries me about Shannon.
We definitely need a new offensive coordinator, but remember we have one of the best defensive coordinators now and Randy is a defensive specialist and the last few games we can not stop the run.
Unfortunately, Shannon may not be the answer but given Shalala's promoting assistants (Coker and Shannon) from within coaches, he may be the best that we can get right now. That being said we need a young energetic offensive genius to come on as coordinator. He can feed the emotion that Shannon lacks.

Exactly! Shannon is doing a great job bringing in the local talent, but players muxt develop to be successful in college. In high school, the really elite players can dominate games with pure athelticism and natural ability. In college everyone else is bigger, faster, and stronger than in high school. Things become much more competitive, and its necessary to really learn the position, pick up some technique, get serious in the weight room, etc.

Shannon seems to be a real "player's coach", and that's great for recruiting, but he hasn't shown that he's going to be successful at developing players and fielding a top team. Time will tell...

Im not saying Shannon is the answer, Im just he needs time for us to say he's not...I would like for him to be alittle bit further ahead, but this is only his 2nd year, 1st year w a full class of his recruits (his sophmores arent all his) and you can already see a change, some of that talent shines already. THe game management, and all that other stuff he can learn & an offensive coordinator will help too. As far as hjow he coaches up his talent after he gets it, well, like I said, he has had only 1 fuill year w an entire class that is his, if you want to argue the sophmore class, I'll give it to you too, thats two years, only two years. certain players improved drastically from the florida game, others not so much, but they're only freshmans & sophmores. Only time will how how good he really is at coaching up these players. Thats my my point, he hasnt had that time yet...

not sold on shannon and according to nix (who i disliked) it has shannon who wanted the slow boring conservative boring offense. that was confirmed by harris' dad so i think shannon has to go also.. it doesn't matter how much talent he get if he doesn't let them use it

That makes a lot of sense Jimbo. I have not heard that yet because I am on vacation in Puerto Rico, but I can believe it.
I also heard yesterday that Shannon wants to go back to a pro style offense.
He is stuck in the 80's.

i also dont like people comparing shannon to davis. shannon got the local guys that scout.com and espn.com and rivals.com said were good. davis got alot of local guys that were off the radar and became good. they became good because they were developed in practice. i dont see that from shannon. i see nothing from shannon on gameday. i think i saw him get in a players face ONCE all season long. shannon just sits there with his mouth shut doing nothing.

getting talent is only half of it. kyle wright has the top QB in the nation coming out of highschool. we all saw how great he turned out, the reason was poor coaching. what do we have now? POOR COACHING/TERRIBLE COACHING/WORTHLESS STAND AROUND AND DO NOTHING COACHING.
