OT: Wasp vs. Caterpillar

The caterpillar lost....

I saw this guy eating his dinner on our deck last night. He was busy enough that he didn't mind me taking some shots. Taken with a 5D Mk II, Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro with 52mm Opteka extension tubes.

Nice shots!
Not trying to hijack your thread at all my friend, your shots simply reminded me of a time last summer when I managed to capture this image with my point and shoot. The yellow jacket won in this case as well.

Thanks XSharkboyX! No worries, that shot is really appropriate here. I was a little late to the meal, it looks like you got there right as it began! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. Yep, I witnessed the whole battle. I could not believe the yellow jacket took down the dragonfly in mid air. As soon as they hit the ground, I ran back inside and grabbed my camera. The victor ate the dragonfly's brains, and then left. LOL

That would have been really cool to see. That's amazing! I didn't realize a yellow jacket could do that, I figured that it found the dragonfly dead.

Yeah I wouldn't have thought so either.. You can see in the pic that it is trying to defend itself, unsuccessfully...

Those are very nice crisp clear pictures, swjim. Were you using a flash or is that all just natural sunlight?

Thanks Recty! I used an on camera 580ex set at a 45 degree angle with a lumiquest pocket bounce. The flash was in ETTL with +1 FEC.

Nice. I think I might pick up something similar, the bounce. I dont really have anything like that for my 580ex II and my pictures always come out with that harsh flashed look unless I have a wall or ceiling to bounce off of.

How does that one attach to your flash? The glue on velcro strips? If so, I might look at something else, I'd rather not glue anything to my flash.

Yes, I have velcro glued to the flash so I can hook this on. I'm pretty particular about my gear too and was a little concerned about putting the velcro on but the way I look at it is the gear is to take pictures, so if gluing a little velcro on improves some of my shots then it's worth it. I have no regrets now.

The Demb flip it is pretty nice too or you can even just use a white index card and a rubber band, that works quite well too.

I guess that's true, and the only reason I dont like gluing something to my equipment is I figure it will lower the resale value later, but I dont ever plan on selling my 580 so I guess I could take the plunge :) It would certainly be nice for some of the close of up macro type photos.

Yep. My 580 is with me for the long term too so the velcro isn't a big deal. It works well with gels too.

I looked at those tubes before, I've almost purchased them a couple times.,, although I'm not sure they make them for Canon? A quick look on Amazon didnt show them, I'll look harder later.

They do (or did) make them for Canon, that's my trusty old Canon 30d in the photo. :)

I don't remember if I bought them from Amazon or EBay. IIRC, they were both the same seller - 47th st photo or something like that but one had free shipping so I went with that one. I can confirm the source later tonight if you like.

Or what Jim said!!!!
Wow, taken to school by an old man, I hang my head in shame :)

You dont need to look up the seller, swjim, I'll poke around.

Thanks for all the info. I dont even have a macro lens yet, HAH. I borrow my brothers so if I buy some extension tubes they will just be sitting in his camera bag most of the time, although I could use them with my 50mm and get some fake macro :)

IIRC, extension tubes really diminish the light making it's way to the sensor, correct? So you almost need to use a flash when using tubes or else be in real bright daylight outside?

Don't worry, I ain't dead yet.

You are correct on using a flash. Heck, if I'm shooting at 5.6 in daylight, I still use it.

You may not be able to use the full set of tubes on a 50mm. I find when using the full set, the 80-100mm range to be the best, at least with my crap tubes.
