OT: Wasp vs. Caterpillar

I went ahead and purchased the Opteka set off eBay... should be here in a week and we will see what I can do with my 50mm f/1.4. Should be fun to experiment with, then I'll also test it out on my bro's 100mm macro.

I think you'll have a lot of fun with them with the 50mm f/1.4 as well as with the 100mm macro. I'll look forward to seeing some pics!

My brother is taking back his macro this week, so I wont have that, but I'll play with the 50mm for sure.

Slow boat to China (or in this case Alaska) shipping so it will be a week or two until I get to try anything out.

Hmmm, so I got my extension tubes in tonight and only had time to take two real quick pictures, I'm curious though about something.

I was only able to take my shutter speed to 1/30th of a second, no lower. It didnt matter what mode I was in, tV or manual.

Is that normal? This was shooting with my 50mm f/1.4 if that matters, and a 5Kmk II.

That sounds odd. I will give it a try later tonight and let you know if I have the same limitations.

Use the 50mm if you can/have one. I'll try it on another lens and see if I have the same limitation or not, I didnt have time to experiment last night.

I didn't take any shots worth sharing but in manual mode I had no issues with going up to full 30 second exposures with my 85 f/1.8 or 100 f/2.8 macro. I don't actually own a 50mm prime but the 85mm is a very close cousin.

Last night I took the battery out and charged it as it was finally getting low. Sometime between then and when I just plugged it in now to check, it's letting me adjust the shutter speed wherever I want to.

That was odd, for sure.

Yep, it is strange indeed.

I'm going to borrow my brother's macro over the weekend, I'm looking forward to that :)

Is there a formula used to tell exactly what magnification you're at? Like can I know that with all three tubes I'm at 2:1 ratio on a 5Dmk II with a Canon 100mm macro lens?

From LordV over at POTN:

Magnification with extension tubes
For a non macro lens with extenson tubes the magnification is given by the formula
magnification = length of ext tubes (mm)/focal length of lens (mm).
So for a 50mm lens with a set of extension tubes totalling 68mm the max magnification = 68/50 = 1.36:1

For a macro lens again you simply add in the existing magnification, so for a 100mm macro lens with 68mm of extension tubes the max magnification should be 1+ 68/100 = 1.68 :1
However this is not what actually you get because at minimum focus the focal length of a macro lens shortens considerably from that at infinity. The focal length of a macro lens at minimum focus is given by the minimum focus distance/4 which for a 100mm macro lens works out to be around 75mm so the magnification you actually get is 1+ 68/75 = 1.9:1
In practice even this is a slight underestimate so I recommend you actually measure it with the ruler method.
