Our new 24DX nano seahorse tank.

Thanks to the help of several people here we have converted our 24DX nano into a seahorse tank. The two seahorse were listed as Australian bred seahorse. I think they are H. Erectus, though I am not sure. Am I right? Can you tell the sex of them? We were told the first one was a male (solid yellow), and the second a female.

Great looking tank!

I'm not so sure on the breed, but as for the sex: seahorse one looks like a male and seahorse two looks like a female. I could be wrong, as its a little hard from the angle.

Sexing looks right. Identifying species is difficult because there is so much variation within species.

Either way, nice horses.

I'm very sure they are Reidi after looking at the coronet and the head. Be ready for TINY fry that require live rotifers as a first food. Newly hatched brine shrimp will be too big for them to eat as a first food. They will also require a kreisel system. They can reproduce every 2-3 weeks. Once they start, there's no stopping them. :)

Hmm, now I am more confused. Are you certain they are Reidi? I called the LFS and she checked and said they were H. Kuda. Are the fry for Kuda the same issue?

They could be H. Kuda, a closer side pic of the head would be the best way to tell. They are young, so it's harder to tell. Kuda also have very small fry. I've never had kuda fry before so I'm not sure how hard they are to raise. I've only had fry from Norther erectus, southern erectus, and Reidi. Oh and dwarfs.

My first pair of seahorses were Kuda. I rescued them from a LFS that was feeding them fish food. They were half dead when I got them, and I couldn't save them no matter how hard I tried. They died. Thank goodness that LFS has never gotten seahorses in again. ( they didn't order that pair.....they received it in a shipment by mistake and didn't know how to care for them.)

Like I said, they could be kuda. It's also possible that the LFS had them mislabled. They look just like the H.reidi we have in the LFS I work at. We get them from ORA. Hopefully an Expert will know for 100%.

What would I look for to tell for certain? I could post a better image of the head. The original resolution of the images is actually 3872x2592, I had to reduce them alot to post them.

I personally believe they are Kuda. The owner of the LFS in town I got them from is usually very knowledgeable. Her store is more high end than any other store in the area (and more expensive) and she always has items you don't see anywhere else. She helped my daughter pick out the two and she seemed pretty certain of the sex. I called back after my first post to inquire about the type and she told me then they were H. Kuda, without hesitation. All the label below the tank said was "Australian Tank Bred Seahorse".

Is there any differences in there care between the two? If not it really doesn't matter, I think their beautiful. :D

Could be H. kuda, could be H. reidi... As I wrote earlier, it is very difficult to ID seahorses. Kuda tend to be smaller than reidi so as your horses age, their size may help you ID them.

Reidi are supposed to have a longer snout but...

Here is a link to an ID guide for horses. Take a look at the pages for H. kuda and H. reidi and see if that helps any.
