Outdoor sump refugium build

will post photos soon

will post photos soon

Also, I will post the photos of the completed OUTDOOR sump, and the way it is attached to the main tank which is inside the house THIS weekend or even sooner...........

Outdoor sump refugium build

So for the summer there will be a solar fan on top of the greenhouse, it will turn on when the temp goes above 78 and when the humidity goes high(forgot the number). Also, I have a water misting that will mist the green house every30 mins to bring the temp down. in theory, the water misting can't bring the temp down any further when the humidity reaches its saturation, but the solar fan won't let the humidity to build to its saturation, so this set up should work very good in theory. I will put the theory to test when the summer comes. well, the water mister, solar fan, opening and closing of the sump top door will be controlled by Neptune apex. The goal is the spend as less money as possible on the energy.

well, if the "theory" doesn't work, then I have a one horse power tradewind chiller which will do the trick at the expense of lot of energy.

I'm ready for summer now.............

It definitely sounds like you'll be fine for summer. If your insulation held up this winter, then summer should be a breeze.

During summer, it may heat up for 10-12 hrs during the day but it also cools down in the evenings so water temp can't get too high.

It's winter that's difficult since the ambient temp stays cold all day and night...which really makes it hard to keep water temp up.

Great build!!

I agree with you

I agree with you but my biggest fear is the greenhouse, it is a heat trapper. however, Regardless of the greenhouse, a good adiabatic system (insulated sump) should be a closed system, i.e., no energy transfer between the system and the surrounding, so I should be ok I guess. Only time will tell. One thing for sure, the insulation saved my outdoor sump project it works fantastic saving energy. A sump heater inside my house more or less consumes the same energy that of the heater in my outdoor sump. No significant difference, so it is awesome. Time will tell what happens this summer.

Also heating the water may be super easy but taking the heat out of water may be a challenge. can't wait for the summer to come and see how this works on hot days.......

released couple of clowns, fathead anthias and powder blue tang in my leemer build today. The brand new tank has never seen fish before. Did fishless cycling with DR TIM'S.
I quarantined these fish by tank transfer method and used Prazipro after the tank transfer in a quarantine tank. Tonight when my two yr old daughter comes home, I want to see whether see notices the difference between fishless tank vs fishful tank. Usually see says fishy when she sees fish ...................................

Maddhugan,
Thanks for letting me check out your sump setup yesterday. It's great to know that this climate can support an outdoor sump with just a bit of engineering. You now have me thinking if I could do something similar......

Any one can do this. the key is to use good insulation, it helps both in summer and winter, you want to create a adiabatic sump and a good heat transfer tank with house which is inside your house.
that's all.
let me know if you need any help
thanks

for me it is a great success

for me it is a great success

I will never have a sump inside my house again. Period.
I'm working on more to improve, I mean the sump door should be automated to open and close depending on the temp outside, I will post once it is done.

Please ppl
if you live in northern CA and if you happen to have the sump outdoor then please post photos, it will be great share ideas.

going awesome

going awesome

Damn going big with the sump/refugium lol. How is it working out for you?

Mine is working out fantastic. I wouldn't do it any other way for my next tank. Tank is dead silent and I can enjoy my ocean in peace all the time. Bean Animal style. For the next one may be modular marine. Not into synergy reef or whatever they call it. Modular marine is awesome in my opinion.

The only criteria for outdoor sump is: you should know what you are doing, i.e., the "Heat Tranfer," and some Transport Phenomena.

That's it.

sure, will update this weekend

sure, will update this weekend

Yeah, it is working out great for me. I will take some photos and post. I was somewhat concerned as ppl were warning me, but once when I figured out the Heat Transfer then everything fell into place and this is a great success for me. This time the risk I took truly paid off.

Well since i have a green house in san francisco I can give you a little real world advice. The problem with the green house is it does a great job trapping heat. Even when its 55 outside my green house can get to 60-70. On a summer day your temps can sour into the 110-120's. I've already permanent leave the doors open on both ends for continuous airflow, and I've got thermally controlled ceiling shutters. I also have misting system to lower the temps when it reachs above 100 (without it my green house is an oven with the doors open). I would not recommend you store your sump in the green house. You may raise your tank temperature depending on how many hot days there are. insulation will help by why even introduce the green house?

I like greenhouse as it reduces dust and pollution and we can have electrical outlets, co2 cylinders etc inside the greenhouse. The way I have done works for me. Thanks for the input.

I've done something similar where the display tank is in the house and the sump is in the garage. Super quiet, no smelly skimmer in the house, and water changes are a breeze. Congrats on your experiment!

wow, great build. anymore pictures of outside and inside. Is your display experiencing any issues? How much have you stocked the display and refugium? Still following to see what's next.
