Over flow tube

Not having done this, I have seen here somewhere you can fill it with sand and go slowly don't get it too hot, or use a spring. My LFS sells Utube for around 12 bucks, either 3/4 or 1" probably cheaper online.

I have made an overflow tube out of regular white PVC... a couple 90 elbows and tubing. I drilled a hole in the top and superglued in a fitting (opens and closes) so I could hook up an aqualifter and occasionally siphon air that happens to get trapped out. It works ok. The problem is due to the PVC, can't see squat. But it never did lose siphon and cause an overflow. I may have just been lucky.

I later picked up a regular old U-tube from the petshop.. have both on my overflow right now. The standard U-tube seems to collect more air. I need to suck the air out every week or so. I am thinking to remove the PVC u-tube to see if faster flow through the single regular U-tube will resolve the air-catch problem.

To be clear... this is all temporary. Its a 29gal I am playing with. My man-cave fish room is -nearly- done. Floor going in this week! Then in goes my big dream tank. I am moving away from the siphon tube. I'll certainly sleep better at night! :)
