Overdosed my tank, cloudy water HELP!!

I recently purchased and used Red Sea Fish Pharm ARE22203 NO3:PO4-X. I had high nitrates and someone recommended it.

The instructions where not all that clear and i overdosed  my tank or at least i came to that conclusion because of the cloudy water. i performed a 10% water change but i think i might be forced to perform an even larger change unless someone knows of any tricks.

I have two Protein skimmers going to see if i can get any of this bacteria bloom skimmed out, so far it does not seem to be working.

I have corals and fish. no one has died and i am afraid that they will.

any help would be greatly appreciated.:uhoh2:

Taken from the Red Sea NoPoX F.A.Q. section:

I have overdosed on NO3:PO4-X, what should I do?
If livestock starts to show any signs of distress, perform an immediate water change of 25%, and monitor livestock behaviour closely. Conduct further partial water changes if necessary.

Not too worry, it will clear up soon. Just bacteria bloomed. Usually it goes away overnite. If you have an air pump, plug it in just in case bacteria depletes oxygen. And If none of the fish breathing rapidly, I would leave it alone. Otherwise perform water change if need it.

It was really cloudy yesterday and my leather coral was looking very bag so i removed it and placed it in an emergency 1.5 gallon tank. I have a webcam pointing at it and i am monitoring the cloudiness from work. I have 2 buckets of water mixing salt since last night and when i get home i will do another water change.

I will keep posting updates.

Happens many times when I was dosing vinegar, it's usually not a problem. O2 depletion is the biggest threat.

Holy crap! :eek2:

No no no. It's 3ml per 25g. I have 50 total gallons, so I dose 6ml per day or 3ml twice daily.

I agree. I would just keep an eye on everything, and maybe do a few partial WC's. Keep us updated.

Here is the current status on the tank.

The tank was noticeably clear when i got home, waited for the lights to dim to not stress the fish.

A 15gal water change was made. The water is definitely getting way better.

Out of all my fish i think i lost the Blenny, i do not see him in his cave so i am not sure, as far as corals go they all look fine and open up fine and this is what i have.

  • Bubble Coral
  • Star Polyps
  • Plate Coral
  • Torch Coral
  • Alveopora Coral/Flower Pot Coral (Can be either of these hard for me to tell)

The Cauliflower Colt Coral looked really bad at the start of the bloom and removed him and placed him in his own emergency tank, he looks to be getting better so i will monitor him very closely, he was my most thriving coral in the tank and also he was home to my 3 clown fish.

I use a sock for mechanical filtration in the sump, should i trash it and get another?

Also gonna leave the extra skimmer on there for a few more days just in case.

I would just wash the sock well, no need to toss it.
Might want to run some carbon to sop up any toxins the colt released while it was mad, and continue for a while after you return it to the tank. They can be aggressive like that.

So happens i loaded my Reactor with new Carbon and also filled up a media bag with carbon and placed it in the overflow. Since i have Chaeto growing in my sump that should help some also.

I will post an update in the morning.

Sorry dude but the instructions are clear, you just didnt read them properly. It says quite clearly on the front of the bottle: 2ml/100 litres/day. But try not to feel too bad, im sure everyone has misread instructions at one time or another. I dosed too much KH buffer when I first started reefing although I didnt lose anything thankfully.

With NoPoX even though I have a 75 gallon system I only started dosing at 1.5ml for the first week as I found 2ml clouded the water. After 4 weeks I am now up to 3.5ml, taking it slowly adding 0.5ml to the dose every week.

Good luck, take it slow and hopefully everything will be fine.

Well this is what i saw. top said ml/ 100 L then (25gal), i assumed it was 3x 100ml per 25gal. And from my search on overdosing with this product its crazy how i was not the only person that understood it this way. Amazon reviews had tons of them, reef forums where a bunch.

but the update on the tank is, the Blenny made a new cave and came out today, water is much more clear, just a small fog like to it but i think i dodged a bullet.

Tank is back to normal, nothing died and the water is clear again, i think i got very lucky considering i added 200ml of NoPox to a 68gal tank.

In the spirit of good luck i bought a Bubble-Magnus Curve 5 skimmer.
