This is my first clam and I am wondering if you guys think he is overextended. I am sorry about the poor quality pictures. I currently have him on the bottom of my tank under 250 watt MH.

he is not overextended he looks stressed out like you been moving him to much he should be more opened. my clam was at least 3 inhes or more of mantel from where the shell ended.

Well, when the MH are on (pic taken with actinics) the mantel is about 3 inches out. This seemed too far for me and I had read that sometimes when they extend extremely far it means they aren't getting enough light.

Well if thats the case and you have 250W MH he will do fine. No worries mine was under 150W MH and did ok now its under 1300W you never can over do it well at least i have not overdone it yet. good luck.

How can you tell it's PM? The clam wasn't extended all the way when I took these pictures. I will try to get a couple more today with it fully extended.

doesn't look like PM to me, more like a coral proximity or alkalinity problem.

what is your Ca and Alk? and how do you maintain it?

what corals do you have and how close are they to the clam??

I should mention that this clam is new to the tank. He has been in there about 10 days (7 days when the picture was taken). My tank is bare bottom and I was trying to get him to attach to the glass. He obviously didn't like it because he kept trying to move. So, I finally got a piece of rock from my fuge and set him on it. He has stayed there since. When the picture was taken he had only been on the rock for about two days.

The only corals he is close to are some zoos. I two-part dose in the morning. My Alk is around 9-10 and my Ca is around 480.

One of my clams has only been opening as much as the first 2 pictures in the last post. Not the original pics up top but the ones directly above.
Any ideas what is going on. It was doing real well for a few weeks and now it is not lookin so hot. One of my other ones does the same thing. It is open about half the day and then closes up.

Could it prossibly be the rocks that look like they are wedged on each side of it's shell? Did you dig that pit or was it just there and you just placed the clam in it? It's a 2D picture so sorry if I have that wrong, but it just looks like the rock sticking out on the right and left is touching the shell preventing it from fully opening.

There are small edges on the rock that could be stopping the clam from opening all the way. I thought that if he was unhappy he would move though. So far he has stayed on this rock for about seven days. Do you think he is happy or should I try to move him?

Well if the rocks are preventing it from fully opening, then it might stress it out and kill it. Is it attached? If it is, there is a post around here where someone gave a really good method for getting to the byssal threads. I would be kind of surprised if it had a strong hold on the rock though. But you NEVER want anything preventing the hinge or ligament from fully opening.

Well I attempted to move him today, however, he is already securely attached. I sort of figure if he wasn't happy he wouldn't have connected so soon. I think I am just going to leave him be.
