Overflow and return troubles

So it has been awhile since I've been on but still have my tanks but know trying to consolidate to just one instead of three. I'm finally getting my 200gal in motion but has started off rough. I have a 1and1/2" overflow that leads to my sump,I didn't do research on what return pump I needed so I bought 1and1/2" PVC pipe, two unions, swing check valve, 3 gate valves, 90's, & 45's hooked it all up and connected it to my brand new Sicce Syncra HF 12.0 you know what happened after that the pump was way to powerful for my overflow which could not keep up. So then I tryed to put my 4.0 from my other tank on it and it still is to much for my overflow. So my question is what do I do thank you. :headwallblue:

Is there any way to enlarge the hole for your drain? The reason I ask is I ran into the same problem. What made it tricky was that I had a glass tank. I found these diamond drum wheels for the Dremel on ebay. They were also fairly inexpensive. I very slowly expanded the hole to accept the next sized bulkhead.

Lessons learned... on our new tank I have two 2" holes, no flow problems now!

Mitch, what kinda overflow we dealing with? do you have a return hole drilled in the overflow also.

1 1/2" pipe can do 2100gph gravity fed, so I can see how the HF 12 could outflow the drain but not the 4.0 that's impossible without some type of restriction. Make sure you didn't accidentally get something stuck in the pipe or that the pipe has a loop causing a trap

We need some pitchers

2nd this request. The durso needs a hole (adjustable if you are fancy) to get the flow started and then to prevent a full syphon forming (literally sounds like a toilet flushing). No hole then it is possible to overflow before the water flow starts. A test is to pull the muffler and check flow. Then install muffler and tune for noise. For whatever reason a bubble of air is not getting out of the plumbing.

Do full power out simulations (> 45 min) to let all the water return to the sump and then see if the system restarts.

I am in 85719. New to the area but not too reefs. Not smart either as this tread is a month only already.
