Overflow boxes

I was on drsfostersmith and noticed that there are two types of overflow boxes. Some are the weir style and some just have tubes going over the back of the tank. What is the best style to go with? I think that the tubes would be really handy for cleaning but read that the weir style work better. So what should I buy? I currently have a diy weir style and am getting fed up with it because it is a bear to clean.

If you cannot or don't want to drill the aquarium, a U-tube style overflow is the best. Lifereef.com has the best U-tube overflows you can buy. I have one and love it!

second that, U tubes are great and never need "priming" again, unless you pull it out.

If you go with a u-tube overflow, make sure you have a strong enough return pump to get a nice flow through the u-tube(s). You'll need this to keep clearing out any air bubbles so they don't accumulate and cause a siphon break.

Could you put the suction line from an aqualifter pump in the tube and push it to the top just in case there were bubbles that got trapped?

U-tube overflow. LifeReef seems to be the most recommended. Just try and match your return pump close to your overflow capacity, and you'll have no worries. IMO you'd have to have an extremely underpowered return pump to get to the point where bubbles accumulating and breaking siphon would become a concern.

I second this...I also have the Lifereef overflows and have several power outages due to storms this year and they have never failed me yet. Pricey but worth the price in my opinion if you're not going to drill or get a reef ready....Just make sure you drill your anti-siphon holes on your return lines and test the sump level before you declare success...LoL My first power failure test the sump level kept rising and I realized I hadn't't drilled the holes yet on my return lines...

I did the exact same thing but I had an accident the first day I filled the tank. I was testing my system then unpluged my return pump to prevent an accident while I went to the garage. I heard my mom screaming "flood!!!" which was not good. I spilled about five gallons on the floor which doesn't seem like a lot but when it spreads out it is!
