How do you calulate how much space to leave in a sump so that when the power goes off and the overflows fill the sump, it will have enough room to contain the excess water and won't overflow the sump.
You could try this calculator here at RC: http://reefcentral.com/calc/sump.php. Once you figure out the volume needed, you can convert that back to inches of height by taking into account the length and width of the sump.
