overflow drain in back or bottom?

I was wondering if there were any advantages (besides looks) to having your tank drilled in the back or bottom? I was reading on bean animal that you want to have a longer linear overflow so the water is thinner going over the over flow edge, this seems to be easier to do on a back drilled tank. Any thoughts or opinions/experience? (Tank size 150 into a 55 gallon sump)

If you are doing an external overflow then the back is better. If not then bottom might be better because IME it is easier to tighten standard bulkheads that lay flat on the bottom versus ones that come out the side. If I were going to have bulkheads come out of the side I would design it with schedule 80 bulkheads.

doesnt matter, the shape of the overflow can be wide with a back hole or bottom hole, most commercially available tanks with drilled bottoms have overflows that work great. you adjust your return pump so your not creating too much of a water fall, both setups work fine. you just have to tune them properly.

Double check your tank before, many tanks are tempered on the bottom. Just be sure either way before you get the bits out.

+1
Also, if you like more real estate in the tank, drill the back. If would like your tank closer to the wall drill the bottom but make sure it's not tempered like scubabum said.
