Overflow drillin

If my overflow only has grooves in the front of the box inside my tank, if i drill more grooves on the sides that would increase the flow in my sump/fuge hopefully. Has anyone drilled their overflow, i dont want to ruin it and have to buy a new one. Thanks for the help.

If you want to drill more groves, ultimately all that would do is calm down the overflow speed of water into your overflow box. Ultimately, your return pump always dictates the flow rate going through your sump.

If your overflow was dictating how much water is entering your sump, that means it wouldn't be keeping up and your return pump would eventually win the race... ie, a flood ;)

I had to put a ball valve on the return just to get it to work. The return pump section of my sump would run empty without the ballvalve.

Well, if this has been a problem since day #1, then quite simply the return pump has more capacity than the drain lines. Throttling back the pump (as you have already done) or increasing the diameter of the drains are options to take care of this.

Alternatively, if this problem has slowly been emerging, then perhaps you have an obstruction in your drains like a snail or algae growth.
