overflow flushing - bigger hole or ball valve?

Okay, so I cleaned up the lines to and from my sump a little bit. I reduced the flex tubing from the overflow by a few feet (it used to have a loop before running into my sump). I also cut off a good foot or more from the return tubing. I am using the AGA overflow that has a durso type fitting. 1" overflow bulkhead, and 3/4" return. My return pump is a Mag 7.

Now I am getting flushing in my overflow that I was not getting before. I can think of two possible solutions and I was wondering which you think would fix the issue (or any other thoughts).

1. drill the hole bigger in the cap of the durso pipe.

2. put a ball valve in the return line to restrict flow.

I think that the flushing effect means that I need to do #2. Any thoughts.

Right now my overflow tube empties above the water line of the sump. Do you think submerging this will help? I need to do that anyway to get rid of the waterfall sound. Or maybe some hard plumbing instead of the flex tube?

Okay, I'll stop thinking of solutions now so I can get some answers :D

So according to that, I need to do something to the flexible tubing going to the sump. What's funny is that when I did have a loop, I had no problem (of course I also increased the flow by reducing the length of the return). I think I will try putting a 45 degree pvc connection to the bulkhead of my sump to see if that helps.

Get Rid of the Durso

Make it the same, except instead of 5" make it taller, and put the holes towards the top. You'll want water to fall appx 1-2" over the overflow.

I might try that if all else fails. What's strange is that that link says that flushing is caused by having the air hole too small, where the durso site says this issues typically is not caused by the size of the air-hole in the end cap.

Does anyone have experience with the flushing effect? What was your solution?
