Overflow goes to skimmer? Skimmer to?

Don't yell, I am new........Going SW after years of freshwater.
I have a new 220g tank that is 6' long x 24" wide x 30" deep.
The tank is going to be build in a wall and visible on both the long
sides. Fish only with live rock.
I want to do Calfo style overflow boxes on one or both sides.
My question is: Is not all the overflow supposed to go to the skimmer?
Then the skimmer output feeds into the sump?
I was thinking about using a Euro-reef RC180. That skimmer has only
a 3/4" inlet. Can I feed it directly from the overflow? I would imagine
that if I drilled 3-1" overflow holes in the overflow box that it would
be easily able to supply a 3/4" line. Or do I need some sort of external
pump to get the water into the skimmer with some pressure?

The other option is to use a skimmer in the sump. I don't think I have
enough height under the tank.

I would then need a pump from the sump back up into the tank, right?

A closed loop could be then used to provide the tank circulation.
Sound good?

Thanks for any advice,
Scott

Euro-Reef suggests feeding their recirculating protein skimmers with 1-1/2 to 2 times your total system volume per hour.

The 180 protein skimmer sounds too small especially if you will be using a sump. You might be able to get away with using the 180, but you may want to back off on the flow through rate a little since it's rated for a smaller system.

You wouldn't want to necessarily use 100% of the flow coming from the 'overflow' to feed the skimmer. There are many different ways to feed a recirc skimmer. Some just use a small pump, some tap into the flow coming down from the overflow. Some tap off of the return (from the sump back up to the display tank).

Hmm....
I thought the idea of an overflow was to skim the protein rich top layer
of water, then remove the proteins with a skimmer.
I could use a RS-250 for a lot less money, but it says it needs a sump
and it is too tall to put in my sump. I wonder if I can feed it without
using a sump.
I am ready to drill the overflow holes and make the boxes. I
am trying to determine how many 1" bulkheads to use in each
of the 2 overflows. I thought I would use one overflow to feed a
skimmer and the other to drain into the sump.
I am also going to drill 2- 1-1/2" intakes for a closed loop.

Thanks,
Scott
