overflow hole

hey guys/gals, how tight do i want to tighten my bulkhead for the overflow? do i need to add silicone to help with leaks? the gasket is installed but want to know if adding silicone is necessary. thanks again!

I never had to add silicone. I did use some teflon tape for the threads. I also put the gasket on the inside of the tank but dont know if that made an impact or not. I made mine hand tight and gave another quarter to half turn with a wrench.

If install correctly, you shouldn't need to use silicone. I normally hand tight and use the wrench to turn another 1/4"-1/2". That works for me ..

The gasket is alway on the side of the flange. You can install the flange inside or outside.

thanks guys! i did hand tighten it but wasnt sure if i needed to take a wrench to it. now the flange.......sorry if this is a dumb question but what is that? the gasket goes on the part that sits inside the overflow rather than the one outside right? did that make sense? can i use 2 gaskets, one for inside and out or is that not necesary?

I wouldn't bother to install one outside man.

Right on! Thanks Phong, i never heard of anyone using gaskets on each side anyway, i was just curiuos if that helps with anything.

And remember that the flat part of the gaskets goes against the glass. The ribbed side goes against the plastic bulkhead.

uh oh. Haha. Does this make a big difference for the return bulkhead if it's on the back of the tank near the top?

It can, especially if the hole in the tank is a little on the big side. If a gasket rib crosses over the edge of the hole, you can get a slow leak.

I've seen some ugly "repairs" that people have tried on those too. I'll just say it doesn't work to smear pvc glue on the outside of the leaky fitting

I think I have the ribs facing the acrylic and the hole isn't a ton bigger than the bulkhead threads. I siliconed it too already....

I know that's not permanant but still a pain.
