Overflow issues.

I have a new 120 with a 1 inch drain. Im running a mag9 for return. When I turn everything on, the water in the overflow rises up and down making a horrible noise. What can I do to stop this??:(

From the limited info it sounds like the input is not matched with the output. ie: same water volume into overflow versus out. Its going to be either you have too big of a pump for the volume that the overflow can handle per minute, or somewhere in your line or the line itself is restrictive causing a backup. Something is not matched correctly with your design. Do you only have one, 1" bulkheads or two?

Or I could be jumping to conclusions, check your standpipe(s) for proper adjustment.

I only have 1 one inch drain. Im running a mag9 return with 3/4 inch return line. My standpip is also 1 inch. Previously, I had a standpipe with a "T" on the top with hole drained in it. That worked ok, but the T hit the glass making the pipe angle, and therefore leak at the bulkhead. So I made a new standpipe, once again with 1 inch pvc, but this time I used an elbow instead of a "T". Now that I have changed the design, the water no longer leaks from bulkhead, but the water goes up and down in the overflow causing the noise. Im lost and out of ideas.

When the standpipe (drain pipe) had the T on the top, it worked fine except for the leaking. So I basicly removed one of the elbows so the T was cut in half sort of. Now the standpipe has one elbow that points down (180 degrees) instead of 2. When the water rises above the drain pipe, it usually goes about 2 inches over the drain pipe and then is forced down. The water flows flawlessly through the pipe. I dont think that the flow is too much. Do you have any ideas?

Its been awhile as I no longer have a over flow on my new tank but if I remember correctly you need have air enter the drain the same time it is in use. do you have some kind of air intake on the drain?

Yes, I have drilled a hole in the top of the pipe. That didn't seem to do anything. And the design im using is based of a dursostandpipe. Im completely baffled as to why my system is doing this.

My suggestion is to try a larger hole drilled in it. It sound like air is backing up in it causing the fluctuations.

Yes, a bigger air hole.

You could also try to put a piece of tubing a couple inches through the air hole. What happens is the incoming water is pushing down on an air bubble while the bubble is fighting to come back up. There is no where for the air to escape.

No prob. I really appreciate all input on my problem. Has anybody heard about mating a 1.5 or 1.25 inch durso pipe to the 1 inch bulkhead?

Need to add some setup pics. Would help much;) If you insert a pipe down your 1" drain as jgoodrich71 said.

Will take care of any gurgling noise. Use clear 3/32 i believe.. Hmmm the same as you would find in an undergravel filter riser tube. Rigid pipe you hook up your air tubing to for air stone.

Adjust the length inserted till noise is reduced and or stops. Mine has a small O-ring around it to help seal any gap around insertion hole. My .02

This is not going to help with your issue, but FWIW, you are seriously cutting down the flow of that 9.5 with 3/4" plumbing. If your intention of using a big pump like that was for lots of flow, you will need to increase the return plumbing size.

Maybe post some pics of the overflow/standpipe setup? It may help.

Thanks sjm817. Ill replace the 3/4 inch with the 1 inch tubing. I dont have the capability to upload photos currently. But the setup is similiar to most durso style setups. I will try to put an airline down the breather hole and see if that helps.
