Overflow noise question

So my overflow makes noise like a gurgling sound and if I increase the flow it goes into a full siphon until it gasps for air and starts all over again it sounds like a toilet flushing. When I restrict the flow it goes away but the water coming from the split lock lines is barely a trickle. I would assume my turnover has to be low is that a problem

What kind of overflow is it? Herbie, Durso, Bean Animal or Hoffer Gurgle Buster?

Lol none of the above. I bought the tank used so I won't be surprised if its some home made drain. Sorry maybe a picture would help when I post it

I was able to control the noise from my overflow by inserting a 5" length of PVC with multiple slots cut in with a hack saw, about 1" in length each totaling 15-20 with more closer to the bottom.

Cagambl not sure what u mean do you have a picture. Am I going to cut the slots on my existing pipe or add another ??

Franky, what he's saying won't make sense until you've seen it. Hop on the Life Reef website; there is a pic of the silencer design that will solve your problem.

same over flow i have but someone broke the niple off made the hole bigger and added a second hole with a hose in it good luck it was a quiet overflow till someone did all that to it

I have the same issue but my overflow is from glass-holes..i did put a piece if sponge in made it quieter but then the sponge restricted the flow and collected too much garbage so took it off..maybe i should try something like yours

I went to the life reef website and I didn't see the silencer. Not sure if they are still selling it

If it's possible to remove the pipe I would replace it with a Durso stand pipe.

Not sure I bought the tank used so not sure if they glued it in place. I'm kind of afraid to yank something with a full tank and have a disaster. Does the pipe pull out straight up. Do you twist it off. Don't know how

I could be way off here....

The water level almost over the pipe looks like it does not drain fast enough, once the water level gets up so high the pipe actually may be acting like a siphon sucking the water out giving you that toilet effect then it empties and has to refill to the siphon point before it flushes again.

Do you have a gate valve on the return? if so you may be able to dial the flow down enough so that this doesn't happen, I think your overflow drain is to small for your return pump.

again this is just what popped in my head and I could be way off, if you dont get what Im referring to go to youtube and search "how to make a surge tank" and you will figure it out.

I always thought they worked best coming straight up with a T with a 90 back down then a open top for better silent airflow.

if it repeatedly does this all day long and stops when the water level gets to the bottom of the overflow drain Id say this could be the problem with one of 3 solutions..

Increase overflow size....... stocked tank so not likely

Decrease flow with some kind of valve... can be bad on some pumps

Or just get a smaller pump.

+1 on checking by decreasing flow with a gate valve. I did that for my tank and no more flushing. What brand and size pump are you using?

My problem is how low is too low. The noise is completely gone after dialing it back but I don't feel I got enough flow for a proper turn over. And I don't think the drain is too small it's 1-1/2" all the way to the sump
