Overflow notch cover?

how about a small piece of screen that you can bent over the top. Just make sure it will be something that won't rust or leach into the tank.

Maybe mcgyver two small pieces of eggcrate tied together to slip over the notches

The black acrylic finally arrived this morning. Here's what I made with it -

Cut 6 D shaped pieces. The small pieces are the exact size of the notches in the overflow boxes.

I then superglued them together into a sandwich - with the tops all lined up.

Here's how they look installed in the overflow box -

And with the overflow lids in place -
