overflow problem

I made my own refugium, to go underneat my 65 gallon. the refugium is a 20 gallon. Everytime i turn on the pump, and water goes between the two, i get so much splash from the water coming from the overflow. Im going to lose so much water this way. Can i submerge the pipe from the overflow? that would help but im worried about back pressure. I tried a acrylic top but its impossible to get it cut to fit around the skimmer, and everrything
Any ideas?
Thanks

many people run their drains into "T" shaped outlets in their sumps. the "T" shaped PVC is actually a "T" on it's side, the water comes in one leg of the "T" and hits the apposing wall, this seperates the air and water - air goes out the top, water comes out the bottom. For additional splash protection, you can put a couple of 90* elbows on the top (air exit) so that the splashes are directed back into the sump.

I have a similar sump/refugium set up and my returnruns back into my sump and the return pipe goescompletely under the water line in the sump. No back pressure issues at all.
