overflow pump size

If you have a drilled tank with a 1/2 hose going about 40 in down how big should the pump be to bring it back to the tank?

The same question but with a 1in hose?

I thought I had seen a something on this but cant find it.

well im not sure what pump to us. I need to now how much water is being drained out of the tank. How do I know this or does that not matter.

The amount of water draining from the tank will depend on the pump. The overflow on my oceanic has a 3/4" drain pipe (I think) and will handle in excess of 600 gph.
