Overflow questions. Any help appreciated.

Hi! I recently bought a bottom drilled 95 gallon tank. It was only drilled once.

What im wondering is, "are overflow walls necessary?"
If not can i just do a simple durso overflow (with a plastic/mesh gaurd) and use it as support for my LR? (I would drill holes in the rock and put the pvc overflow through the holes to create that standing rock tower look)

i realize the chances of critters blocking the overflow this way are increased but im really looking for issues i have not considered.

I would be pretty nervous about a rock shifting and loosing the gasket for the bulkhead.
