Is there a way to get an overflow rated at say, 900gph to only push 300gph?

I am plannin on running a sump with a mag5 return pump w/ 3 ft of head. Figure it would be around 300gph and i need the overflow to match but having trouble finding a 300gph overflow

If your using a 300 gph return pump then a 600 gph hour overlow would work or more. You don't have to go extactly what your return pump pumps. I use a 200 gph pump on a 600 gph overflow.

The overflow will only return the amount that is pumped in, up to its limit. If you pump 150 GPH to the display, thats all that is returned to the sump. But...If the return is rated for 600GPH and you pump 750 into the tank, the extra 150 might end up over the sides of the tank.

My LFS sold me a MAG9... and I spent a week trying to find out how to get the overflow to take the full 900gph (and yes, they sold me the overflow too). Finally I read the specs on the Oceanic overflow to find out it would only handle a MAX of 600. Thank goodness for the great folks here at RC with all their valuable input!
