Overflow surges when feeding?

I have a 90 gallon oceanic with built in megaflow overflow. It didn't use to do this, but when I feed, the water in the overflow gets really high then flushes it all to the sump then it raises in the overflow and does it over and over, after about 45 minutes it tends to stop doing this. It only does it when I feed, and sometimes when I unplug then plug back in the return pump. I only have a Mag 5 with about 2 feet of hose going to the bulkhead.

something in the food is changing the surface tension of the water, ie: oily food..

have you changed foods lately

Haven't changed foods. Today, I took the return drain pipe and bulkhead out of the overflow an cleaned them, re installed, also took off drain hose from bulkhead to sump and rinsed it out, was pretty clean. Also but a long brush and tried to clean the pipe that goes into the sump, I can't take it all the way out because it's too long and hits the main display tank. I put in some thawed frozen food and it didn't surge on me, so maybe I might have it fixed, time will tell.
