Overflow

I have a 75 gallon tank, not drilled. and need help picking out an overflow. i had my min d set on cpr cs 100 but have recently been told about the u-tube style which i previoulsy thought was archaic.

I agree if its not set up get it drilled. If it is up and running buy the Lifereef overflow. I currently have an undrilled 75 and started out with the CPR unit you mentioned and suffered with it for almost 2 yrs and 3 near floods before i spent the cash and bought the lifereef. The CPR will fail, its just a matter of time. The lifter pumps die,the port in the top plugs up,and if a fish gets sucked into it, good luck getting them out. Not to mention they are noisy! My tank is in my bedroom.

I vote either lifereef or amiracle overflow. The amiracle is less expensive than the likereef and just as good quality.

Lifereef's high quality but others like Amiracle operate in the exact same way...with the U-tube. They're reliable and they'll end your flooding issues. Drilling is ideal IF you can get it done successfully without breakage. Go with the Lifereef or something similar with the U-tube and you'll be fine....really.

IMO there is only one choice... Lifereef:D

Pretty much what I was going to say.

I have one on my 75, have had it for about 4 years now (( or more, but I don't want to realize that I am getting old. ;) ))
It has worked flawlessly the whole time, the only time it has lost siphon is when I remove the U tube from the box. If I ever get another non reefready tank, I will only get a lifereef overflow.

Lifereef has a couple drawnbacks, they come with a threaded barbed output. I like to use hard PVC with slip fittings instead. And the 1400gph model is absolutely huge for a dual model, they just two stuck together instead of making a different model.

I have two overflows running, a 600gph Hurricane on my 29gal and a 1200gph CFL aquatic on my 125gal, both off ebay. Both have been flawless with even the frequent Florida power outages. There really is no difference between manufactuers, just what you pay.

Just make sure you get a larger rate return pump then add a ball valve to the return piping. Stay away from CPR's, anyone who hasn't had a problem yet will sooner or later.

Unless they changed recently, they come with both fittings, I used hard PVC with mine.
Its an old picture and I have changed things a bit, but you can still see all the hard PVC.

I have a dual clear pro aquatics. seems to week good. It has the slip on fitting for the hose that matches the input on most sumps, basically hook it up and start the syphon. I've had it going for about 4 days now with a mag-drive 9.5 as the return pump and it seems pretty reliable. No air bubbles get trapped up top, it just sucks them right through. It is a tad noisy but thats about it.

That being said, If I ever get another tank, it will be reef ready.

From the website:
1" male thread output and included 1" hose-barb fitting. 3/4" output for Nano-Prefilter
http://www.lifereef.com/siphon.html

Either way they just bond (didn't know PVC "bonded" to arylic :rolleye1: ) a 1" slip to threaded male adapter to the box. I feel a lot more comfortable (and some price justification) with the uni-seals on the other boxes and avoiding the bottlenecking with the piping switching back and forth from the threaded part.

Whoevers pays $199 for the 1400gph model must be crazy or blindly rich.
