I redid my 90rr that had a 1 inch drain and a 3/4 return...I want to use both as a drain and have the return over the back.

how can I have both drains running full open? do I need to plumb both drains into 1 drain line. I do not have a durso or stockman for the 3/4 side so it is just the bulkhead there is a standpipe for the 1" drain...any suggestions on what I need to do?

also does anybody have any links for diying a standpipe?

Do you need the flow from both? I'd make one (probably the 3/4") slightly higher than the 1" and make it an emergency in case the 1" get's blocked. I'd also run them completely separately to the sump, if you join them and something gets down there, they will both backup.

I made mine using this design: http://www.aquariumlife.net/projects/diy-overflow/74.asp

and this looks similar.

but debated using this: http://www.dursostandpipes.com/?page_id=58

yes I need both of them .....my return pump is 1200gph so I thought I could just throttle it back at little bit......return is already plumbed over the back and with just the 1 inch side draining the pump is throttled back so much that i am getting hardly any flow out of the return ends.

My thoughts were that if both drained I could use a bigger pump and maybe eliminate a couple of powerheads from the tank.

ah, okay. I've never seen that done, but I've never really looked into it. I would still route them 100% seperately to the sump, but I'd think that if they were close to the same height, it should work. Maybe make the 1" slightly lower so that it gets enough water to be full, and then let the 3/4" pick up the extra. I think that would be more quiet that way.

I would have never thought that a 1" drain that is supposed to only drain 600gph would keep up with a 1200gph pump...but by george it does. I have the drain wide open and the pump wide open and it is working like a charm..

thanks for the help sandelscout.

I bet mine was cheaper!!! $0.00. Not to bad of a price. I helped someone out and it came back to me all at once.I hope no-one else thinks like me. That could be dangerous.

waynesworld....I am stuck with 1" as they are drilled in the bottom and the bottom is tempered.

jasontammy....it was $35 local..it will be for my 50g cube that will house a red bubbletip and a pair of goldstripe maroon clowns..
