What is the best way to set up the plumbing in a drilled 20 gallon tank?

I guess it depends on how it was drilled. How many holes, where are they, etc.. If you haven't drilled it yet, I would drill for a herbie (2 drains) and 1 return.

They would have to be in the back. But I was hoping for two drain holes and 1 return.

I drilled my 20g for a herbie set up. Check out the BRS video on their setup playlist. I copied that setup with the two 90 degree elbows, one facing up, one facing down. I drilled one hole about 6" down, and the other is centered at the top of the other hole. (They are drilled for 1" pvc, so one is 6" down, the other is about 5.5" down from the top).

Silent overflow, easy to dial in, starts back up whenever my pumps turn off for feeding.

For my return I just have a hang over the back return, but honestly, I wish I drilled it instead.

How many gph will a 3/4" pipe drilled in the back of the tank get?

What I saw in my research is that people sometimes have two holes drilled in their tank, a 3/4" and 1". Everyone said to use the 3/4" as the full siphon and the 1" as the emergency overflow.

Would a 700gph return pump work for that?
