overwhelmed and ashamed

im a littled ashamed to admit i only have a aqua c remora skimmer on my 75 gal tank(100 gal setup w/sump} and on the other hand,i overwhelmed on which one i should get.ive been reading a lot about different ones and just dont know which i should go with, now im not asking everyone to give opinions on the best brand or model, but rather would like to know what type is the best to go with? are in sump better than free standing? i just dont know what to do,ive read articles saying tank volume should not go through the skimmer more than 2 times per 12 hours,is this what most people live by?

also note,i am putting baffles in the sump, not sure where to put them,i see different in sump skimmers have different sized footprints they need to run,i have 5 baffles, was going to do 3 on one side and 2 on the other to maybe migrate a refugium into it in the near future.

Does it not seem to work? Does it pull any skimmate, how much? Please don't make the mistake of falling for all of the "you gotta have what I have to be right" talk. I happen to use the much maligned ASM G-3 and happen to like it a lot. I didn't even do all of the mods that everyone says you must do to make it work "right" :eek2:

thats what i mean, everyone says their skimmer skims a cup a week or every two,is that because they just have a lot more stuff in the tank? mine hasnt had a full cup (all together) since its been going again(some months) i only have 5 fish, and a couple young corals(to the tank) could that be why? i just know ive been reading that certain proteins need longer bubble cling time than others, and a aqua c isnt very tall at all,hmm

I have a CPR skimmer that is undersized (by 15 gallons) for my tank but I bought it for $35 dollars cause it might have been broken. I tinkered with it a bit and it works great now.

That said. My first week with it I had to clean the cup 1 or 2 times a day. Now I can go a few without emptying it. I'm new to this as well so I could be wrong but I think it depends on how dirty your tank is and what you have in there.

For example. Go ahead and stir up your sand (if you can risk it of course). The cup will most likely be filled within 24 hours.

I thought the Remora series was the best out there and I had fully planned on getting that exact skimmer until I got the deal on mine.

Hope this helps,
Peter

Your Remora is a great skimmer. It may be undersized but it would then be filling up rapidly. Check the height of the collection cup. If you have the O-ring holding it too high, it won't skim. try lowering it and you should get plenty of skimmate. If that doesn't work, make sure you clean the venturi port with the little brush they sent you. Some people mod the Remora with a bigger pump. I tried that and just got a loud hum from the pump vibrations so I'm not a fan of that approach.

Bottom line is that if you aren't getting any skimmate, your Remora isn't set right. BTW, if you don't have it drilled for the elbow that allows the collection cup to drain into a bigger container, check out Ameka Aquatics to get the elbow (threaded one side, hose barb on the other side) and install it. Once you get the Remora working you will need more waste capacity (unless you like emptying the cup everyday). Let me know how it works.

I had just purchased a Aqua C pro for my 46 bow, got it used for 60$. I was told by many people that this would be ok for my system...I was worried that it would be overkill...any ideas?

I don't believe that (no more than 2 to 12 times per 12 hours) I am running 700 gph (8400 gallons every 12 hours) This is 84 times my tank and refugium/sump. It is working great. I can't even imagine running a full tank volume thru the skimmer only twice in 12 hours. Also, I have never seen any evidence or rational argument to demonstrate you can overskim. I don't think you can.

you don't need to be ashamed of your remora. Its one of the most popular skimmers out there. There are several skimmers that aren't great, but once you get into the ones over about $100, its more a matter of preference and set up, IMO. I had a remora on my little 29g and it was just too powerful. Switched to a Tunze 9002 nano skimmer and I love it!
