My lfs has a beautiful oyster for sale . It is about 4 inches across . Looks healthy and the shell is loaded with bright orange & red sponge. Trouble is that they took it out of water and after 2 weeks a portion of sponge has died. ques # 1. After 2 weeks do you guys think that all the sponge that was gonna die has? Or might it all die off. If I were to get it I wouldn't let it hit the air again.#2- I have a clam thats doing great for about 8 months now. Is an oyster just as hardy or is it more difficult. Thankyou for any advice and info you might share with me. Brian

Hot much help, but I have a small oyster in filter feeding tank, it's doing well, few months already.
And I have the snowflake coral with associate sponge, but it died pretty soon - could be red cyano, could be temperature drop to 70F, when GFI turned all off at night.
I wouldn't risk.

Definately not red cyano. I'm basically wondering ,If a sponge is exposed to air, and if after 2 weeks a section has died off.Do you think the die off is complete or will it all die off?

I would pass on it. Oysters and sponges are filter-feeders, and there is not enough food in a typical tank for them. They need a special kind of tank setup with HEAVY feeding and then a good waste removal mechanism. Most sponges and oysters slowly starve over a few months in our tanks.
