OZONE - my observations

I am a little nervous about getting a unit.Would I have to run it threw my skimmer since I have a pacific coast skimmer and a remora pro I am not sure if those skimmers are ozone friendly.I don't know alot about ozone units.I have seen another brand that works without a dryer.Marine depot site

the dryers are recommended, but my unit is in a low humidity equip. room so i sont use it most of the time. It is rec to run into the skimmer. I havent noticed any bad effects but i guess it depends on the skimmer container and time. The benifits to me are worth it.

today i saw my orp go from 280 to 440 in just a couple of hours. Another reason to run 03 with a controller!!

I run both uv and ozone. I do not use a dryer but should for unit efficiency. I have run my ozone for about a month now. It took a few weeks to see a difference in my tank. I will say however that my water and tank are much more clear/clean now than they were. my skimmer is much more efficient. I am pleased with this addition. Increase orp slowly as your corals will bleach.

If you are letting or getting your ORP from 280-440 mV in a couple of hrs either something is wrong or you are doing something wrong. You should never let your OPR jump that much.

The ozonizer in question is a UV bulb type that run @ 360 nm ( wave length) and generate O3. I do not like these, as they do not have a control dial on them. Most are big and are either on or off like a machine gun at full output. Some of them have a switch for a low or high setting. That means no protection if some how it gets stuck on, which has happen and just recenlty, zooming a guys ORP to 600 mV = dead animals. The high tension tranformer/Corona Discharge almost always have a control dial. If the unit is say 100 mg O3 the dial can be set anywhere in between that. This acts to protect you if it gets stuck on. If for example you had 100 gal net and a 100mg unit, with the std O3 range of .3-.5 mg / hr/gal, then

.3 x 100 or .5 x 100 = 30 mg set point or 50 mg set point.

Most systems require a little tweaking of this but in this case the dial would never be set to 100 mg, as that is way to much.

There should not be an issue with skimmer plastics. Sander's makes some skimmers with cheap plastic. I ran them for years where they finally turned yellow and cracked. The yellowing of the plastic is a sign to change them usually.

I should have added that having an ORP of say 440 mV and adding something to the tank, food, water change, etc. will cause an ORP drop for a couple of hrs, is that what you mean ?

I am actually quite surprised. I decided to do a recirc mod to my Euroreef Skimmer, and after I disconnected it to do the mod, I had to also turn off the Ozone while working on the skimmer.

My ORP dropped from 420 to 365 and has stayed at 365 for two days now without Ozone. Apparently, once I used to Ozone to get the ORP up from the original low in the 200's the system became clean enough to maintain a higher ORP on its own, with no skimming or Ozone.

I am curious to see how long this will last, so I intend to leave everything off for a while to see what happens and how fast or not the water quality deteriorates..

yup! As i'm 'observing' its interesting to see how sensitive it is

i have noticed the same thing!
