they are available in the US too but not as often as the more common types of pomacanthus (emperor, queen, french, majestic)

Beautiful fish! I see a number of tank raised Macs here in Tampa off and on throughout the year.

Do you still have your gorgeous Emperor Angel, and are you still vodka dosing your FOWLR? Your mention of dosing inspired me awhile back to start treating my FOWLR in similar manner (though with vinegar instead).

no i dont have the emp anymore, got out of marines and went back to cichlids for eighteen months, found it really boring as when they get big they dont do a lot so ive just set it back up for salt.

probaly do vodka again, low bio load at the moment so dont need to yet. how do you dose vinigar compared to vodka, must be a lot cheaper. always ended up drinking half of it myself !

is that your queen angel in your avatar ?

Vinegar supposedly has 1/8 the carbon concentration of vodka, so you need to dose 8x as much as what you would do with vodka. Same concepts apply: ramp up really slowly and back it down to a maintenance dosage when you start seeing a drop in NO3. Since vinegar is acidic like vodka (but much more so), it is even more desirable to dose very slowly throughout the day to avoid sudden pH changes. I use a medical dosing pump (same type as I use for two part alk/calcium dosing) to dose during the ph upswing time of day (afternoon to evening), while I dose alkalinity during the night. While the motivation of using either vodka or vinegar remains the same (injection of carbon into the water column), many have reported that vinegar is far less prone to causing cyano outbreaks compared to vodka. I haven't tried vodka, so I can't speak directly on this.

That is a picture of my Queen Angel from a year and a half ago roughly. I need to get an updated adult picture up there. :)

PS: The vodka may be more expensive, but I bet you have more fun dosing than I do! ;)

Nice fish. Mac's are a great fish - but they get big, and grow quickly. They are one of the few angel's (in fact one of the few marine fish) that routinely can and do reach sized close to their wild counterparts ..... that 20" ..... and are easily capable of hitting 12" plus in only a couple of years! They are not an especially common fish, even less so in the UK & Irleand ..... hence you don't hear about this much. Forewarned is forearmed.
