P03 relentless, I want to take my ball and go home...

DEFNTLY rid it of the filter pads, and get a reactor and put ROWAPHAUS in it. YES its a lttl pricey but it will work wonders. Also check ur water u use for water changes and see where the TDS on it is.(B4 u mix it)

How old is the sand bed. I say get rid of it. We did in our 180g and was the best thing. Also your live rock is probably leeching. If possible, cook it in a garbage can for 2 months completely covered. There is a thread about cooking LR.

I highly doubt it is your feeding. Get rid of the Gfo if you run pellets. You may want to begin using microbacter7 to supplement the bacteria.

Good luck.

Somehow I missed the latest replies to this thread, so I will post some updates. I cut back feeding for now, at least until I can get a handle on the phosphate. I did remove all the pads as well. One problem I found with the pellets was a large clump in the middle of the reactor that had become a solid mass. I was monitoring the flow through, but it appeared that all of the media was tumbling, when only a portion around the mass in the center was actually moving. So with the pellets working at full capacity now and the filter pads gone my skimmer has picked up production greatly. I haven't checked the po4 level since last Saturday, but after I did a water change and sucked out the hair algae on the back glass what's left seems to be receding. Saturdays reading was at 0.30, I will recheck tonight and post results.

One thing different I did hear was about running gfo with the pellets. I thought if nitrate was already at desired levels and phosphate was high that it was recommended to run gfo with pellets initially? Something along the lines of giving the system time to even out without expecting the bacteria to remove phosphate without the nitrate??? Maybe I understood something wrong..... Thanks again.

if you used rock from your last tank...i assume you must have moved your sandbed into your new system too?

if thats the case, its coming from the sand. definitely replace it.

i had a 120 gallon system full of sps before i even knew what phosphates were. then i moved the tank and reused the sand and rock in another system, and suddenly i couldnt keep sps and i had no idea why. i replaced the sand and my problem ended.

Thanks for the help, but I'm fairly certain it isn't the sand. I did use some of the sand that was in the old tank, but only for the fuge. In the DT it was all fresh.

I am happy to report that with the changes made to the tank this weeks reading is 0.12. After the .30 last week I was almost sure my brown corals would start STN soon enough, but all week I have noticed improvements.

I'm a little worried though that my hungry fish don't see this as a victory.

Glad to hear you made progress, I wouldn't worry about your fish, feeding 2-3 times a week is perfectly fine.

glad to hear things are improving, but what changes did you make of the ones suggested so far?
