P04 and N03 deficit

I've been checking my P04 and N03 for the past couple of days with new reagents. It prompted me to do the testing because my millies are getting pale and poor PE's, other SPS are ok, but not great.

P04 ranges from 0.00 to 0.01, and N03 always zero. I removed my GFO couple days ago, and still have same reading yesterday thats why I dosed 1 gm stump remover yesterday afternoon and got 2ppm N03, then I checked tonight its back to zero, I guess I can dose it for a few more days with same amount and test again.

My P04 is still zero. I ordered NeoPhos and should be here by tomorrow, my question is, is it OK to correct both by dosing these chemicals at the same time, or I'll let N03 stabilized first before increasing my P04?

My total water volume is about 60g, I feed 2 cubes (mysis and brine) and assorted pellets daily. Reef roids and Fuel twice a week (alternately). I also dose KZ flatworm stop and Pohls extra twice a week. I have a 2" blue tang, Blotchy anthias, CBB, mandarine, 2 small clowns, small blue flasher wrasse, big pintail wrasse, possum wrasse, small cardinal, and a catalina goby (does that count? LOL). I replace my filters 2-3 times a week, depending how fast they get clogged. I believe my skimmer is rated for my tank. (NYOS 120 on a Reefer 250)

My sandbed have no algae, just some GHA here and there on the rocks (treating it currently with Vibrant, and manual removal). My DYI ATS took care of all algae on my sandbed.

Stop dosing stump remover Jasper.. lots of people have reported issues with how pure it is... Super cheap to order the right product. I use www.nilocg.com and order pure kno3

Oh no, I just dosed my second dose today. My 2ppm N03 was consumed back to zero.

I'll check pure KN03. Do you know if they have same measurement/formula? For stump remover, I'm consistently getting 2ppm from 1gm stump remover.

I punched in your water volume (60) and it said 1 gram = 2.7 increase.

A few things I wanted to note:

- Your stump remover is suppose to be potassium nitrate, so if you are measuring by weight this whole time, then there is no change. The catch is that it smells different? I mean if you think about it, no one is going to use top grade stuff if you are going to use it to melt down a tree you already killed.

- Be careful playing with NeoPhos and Kno3. The issue is at very low levels, one of the two could be bound by the other. Meaning you Add one and the other one goes down even more..

- Be careful when adding either products, to stick with a dose for a while before increasing it. What I've noticed is that the first few dose has no effect, but at the 3-4 dose, it shoots up. With Neophos, this spike was substantial.

- Can you tell me how you are measuring Phos? I always second guess if they are using the right Hanna when they say zero lol If you look at the front of the green egg, it has a H###

Finally, I have stop messing with these two things. I found it to be really scary, and causes my tank to be not stable. It also makes me chase numbers and that's bad news for my sps. This is just me and lots of people have had success dosing these products. I just don't have the patients for it. Instead I looked to using APEX turn off my skimmer at night, and lowering light cycle in my fuge.

I've stopped dosing, but I keep it around in case of "emergencies" . I wouldn't object for you to come over and get a little baggie of Kno3 if you want to hold over. Just text me Jasper.

Finally, I have stop messing with these two things. I found it to be really scary, and causes my tank to be not stable. It also makes me chase numbers and that's bad news for my sps. This is just me and lots of people have had success dosing these products. I just don't have the patients for it. Instead I looked to using APEX turn off my skimmer at night, and lowering light cycle in my fuge.

I don’t think he’s chasing numbers. He started off saying that his milis were looking pail and he is using numbers to diagnose the problem which I believe is the correct approach.

I agree! I am just pointing out MY reason for stopping.. Not that he is chasing numbers. In the end, it was just easier for ME to stop dosing and went with other approaches at increasing Nitrate/Phos. As noted above, I'm not a Patient person. As with a lot of things in this hobby, there is 10 ways to accomplish the same goal.

Yup, that's sounds about right. My NYOS N03 test reads somewhere between 2 and 3 every time I test after dosing. And goes back to zero after 24hrs. I just say 2 because I'm too lazy to put "œbetween 2 and 3, or 2.5. LOL

I'll keep testing daily for at least a week to monitor it closely. I won't increase dosing unless really necessary.

As for the NeoPhos, I dosed about 18 ml and it was right on the dot, 0.02 an hour after dosing. I only have the HI713, not the ultra low range. I might grab a 736 though to have piece of mind. But for now, I'm not too worried because my current one respond to changes I make.

Thanks. Yup, I only test once in a while, and only when I see some major change on my corals or fish.

Now that you guys mentioned it, I see lots of negative feedback about stump remover. You guys are scaring me. LOL

Also, is it a bad idea to take down my ATS? Do you guys think it’s stripping my nutrients too much? I’m afraid to do it because my ATS got rid all the algae on my sand bed, and it might come back if I take it out?

I checked Amazon, and they dont have one for Prime. Ugh I wonder if Tong's have the HI736, or Ellis Aquatics.

I was going to dose tonight, but when I checked my levels, my numbers are weird. My N03 is still the same, between 2 and 3, and my P04 went up to 0.03. Is this common? I checked twice.
